Position Summary The Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) works as part of a collaborative veterinary team to provide medical care to shelter animals, animals in foster care, adopted animals, and community pets. This role supports the full continuum of care - from intake exams through treatment, surgery support, and, when necessary, humane euthanasia - while coordinating closely with fosters, the veterinary team, and shelter staff. Primary Responsibilities Work as part of a team to provide veterinary care to animals in the shelter and animals in foster care, in support of adopted animals and community pets. Perform initial medical intake examinations and assessments of incoming animals, including determining appropriate placement and housing based on health status (e.g., sick, contagious, or otherwise at-risk animals). Coordinate and communicate next steps for each animal, including foster placement, surgery, DVM evaluation, behavior evaluation, and treatment planning. Assist in critical patient care, including IV catheter placement, IV injections, and monitoring patients on IV fluids. Implement treatments for sick animals based on established protocols. See LVT appointments for animals in foster care, including routine vaccinations and sick-pet appointments; coordinate DVM checks as needed. Perform basic in-house lab work, including urinalysis, ear cytology, and blood smears. Draw blood samples for heartworm testing, FeLV/FIV testing, and blood smears, or to submit to an outside diagnostic laboratory; run in-house heartworm and SNAP tests. Assist with overall patient monitoring and veterinary care, including administering daily medications; alert a DVM if an animal in the shelter's care needs further assessment, follow-up, or is not responding to its treatment plan. Perform accurate data entry, using shelter software to communicate with the team, and maintain accurate veterinary records. Assist DVMs with anesthesia and surgery on an as needed basis and cover for the lead surgical LVT as needed. Perform humane euthanasia in accordance with shelter protocols. Work with the team to monitor multiple email accounts and phone lines, including triaging and coordinating outside requests for assistance and sick foster animals requiring intervention. Transport samples to outside laboratories as needed (e.g., Cornell, FedEx). Qualifications Current Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) certification in New York State, in good standing. Hands-on experience with intake exams, IV catheter placement, anesthesia monitoring, and surgical assistance. Comfort and competence performing basic in-house diagnostics (urinalysis, cytology, blood smears, SNAP/heartworm testing). Ability to remain calm and effective in a fast-paced shelter environment, including triaging multiple cases at once. Strong communication skills for coordinating with fosters, adopters, and the veterinary team. Comfort with the emotional demands of shelter medicine, including performing humane euthanasia. Experience with PetPoint or similar shelter management software preferred. Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds. Allergies to animals may be a disqualifying factor for this role. Employment Type Part-time, with the potential to grow into full-time. Schedule Specific schedule is negotiable and based on current needs. Must be able to work at least one weekend day per week and some holidays.
