About Us:
Bridgetown Veterinary Emergency & Referral (BVER) is a specialty animal hospital located in Portland, Oregon. Our team includes highly skilled veterinarians specializing in Emergency/Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Surgery, Ophthalmology, and Radiology, supported by dedicated technicians and client service professionals. Position Overview and Schedule:
We are seeking an experienced Veterinary Assistant to join our team as a Laboratory and Pharmacy Technician. This position is essential to the daily operations of the hospital, supporting our Emergency, ICU, and Specialty services by ensuring efficient laboratory operations, accurate pharmacy management, and timely diagnostic testing. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced specialty and emergency environment. Full-Time 4/10 hour shifts (Sun-Wed) Includes weekends and holidays
Essential Responsibilities:
Perform routine laboratory testing, including CBCs, chemistry panels, platelet estimates, urinalysis, fecal analysis, and other diagnostic procedures. Perform daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance and quality control of all in-house laboratory equipment. Identify critical laboratory results and promptly communicate findings to the attending veterinarian. Troubleshoot laboratory equipment failures, unusual laboratory results, and analyzer error messages. Coordinate and prepare outgoing reference laboratory samples, ensuring proper packaging, documentation, and shipment. Maintain the digital laboratory send-out log and verify all required documentation is completed accurately. Ensure laboratory callback communications have been entered into the patient's medical record for pending diagnostic results. Prepare, label, and dispense medications accurately according to veterinary prescriptions. Maintain pharmaceutical inventory, monitor expiration dates, rotate stock, and reorder medications, laboratory reagents, and supplies as needed. Adhere to all regulations and hospital policies regarding the storage, handling, dispensing, and documentation of pharmaceuticals, including controlled substances. Complete daily, weekly, and monthly Cubex inventory counts. Collaborate with Emergency, ICU, and Specialty teams to prioritize laboratory workflow and facilitate timely patient care. Assist with patient discharges during peak workflow periods to improve hospital efficiency. Maintain laboratory cleanliness, organization, and adequate inventory levels. Participate in quality assurance initiatives and follow all hospital Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Required Qualifications:
Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Veterinary Assistant, Veterinary Technician, or Veterinary Laboratory/Pharmacy Technician, preferably in an emergency or specialty hospital. Strong knowledge of veterinary laboratory procedures, pharmacy operations, and specimen handling. Experience with in-house laboratory analyzers and quality control procedures. Strong organizational, multitasking, and time management skills. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Experience with SmartFlow, EzyVet, Cubex, and IDEXX is preferred. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multiple hospital departments. Ability to remain calm, organized, and professional in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
Compensation & Benefits Pay:
$23.00 - $26.00 per hour
