A Veterinary Technician or Technologist assists veterinarians in diagnosing and treating medical conditions in animals. May perform diagnostic tests or administer medications. Works in private veterinary practices or animal hospitals.
The Clinic Veterinary Technician is responsible for ensuring that both the privately owned and shelter animals who come to our center receive the best possible care and attention. Duties include cleaning and maintenance of medical equipment and exam rooms, assisting veterinarians in examinations and relevant procedures, medical record review and entry, client education, and the appropriate relay of information between clients and doctors and/or management. All job duties are supportive of the Providence Animal Center's mission in accordance with the organization's policies and procedures, and with the safety of people and animals at the forefront of all activities. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Safely and appropriately handle animals in accordance with PAC protocols to ensure proper care. Review vaccination records and prepare vaccines in compliance with regulations. Assist veterinarians during exams, wellness checks, and treatments using proper restraint protocols. Administer medications, vaccinations, and treatments prescribed by a veterinarian. Trim nails, express anal glands, clean ears, draw blood, and perform other routine procedures. Obtain and record animals' vital signs including temperature, pulse, and respiration rate. Collect/prepare blood, urine, and fecal samples for relevant testing. Perform routine laboratory procedures such as urinalysis, feline leukemia tests, and blood counts (minimum database). Perform skin and ear cytology collection and analysis. Coordinate with team members to ensure accurate information and care of patients. Prepare and label medications to be sent home with the patient. Explaining relevant medical care and medication instructions to owners. Educate clients on routine health practices, preventatives, vaccinations, and Complete daily, weekly, and monthly Clinic tasks. Demonstrate regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.
Maintain:
Medical equipment after use (IDEXX Sedivue and centrifuge). Cleanliness of Wellness Clinic. Clinic inventory, records, and logs including supply inventories, controlled drug register, and ringworm culture logs. Animal records using PetPoint and Clinic HQ software.
QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to: Multi-task and perform in a fast-paced team-oriented environment. Remain composed in emergency situations and cope with death. Read and interpret medical records to determine vaccination status and preventative care needs. Restrain cats and dogs of any size. Use appropriate safety equipment for fractious or feral animals. Effectively communicate about animal care, by understanding and using medical terminology. Learn to use the adoptions database software, PetPoint, to enter medical and behavioral information. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers. Work under stressful conditions and work efficiently and effectively under those conditions. Must have a genuine interest in the work, programs, and mission of Providence Animal Center.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Must be able to: Stand for long periods of time, lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted, lift and carry 25 lbs. unassisted, and handle dogs as large as 150lbs.
