Hill Country Humane Society | Buchanan Dam, Texas Full-time, part-time and contract opportunities available Pay based on experience Hill Country Humane Society is seeking an experienced veterinary technician to join our growing medical team. This position will focus primarily on high-volume spay and neuter surgery through our MASH program, public vaccination clinics, and community veterinary-care initiatives. We need someone with practical veterinary experience who can step into our clinic workflow and begin assisting on surgery days immediately. Training will be provided on HCHS procedures and protocols, but applicants must already have strong foundational veterinary technical skills. Primary Responsibilities Assist veterinarians during high-volume spay and neuter clinics. (MASH) Prepare patients for surgery, including weighing, identification, examination support, vaccination, medication, clipping, and surgical preparation. Calculate, prepare, and administer medications under veterinary direction. Assist with induction, intubation, positioning, and surgical preparation based on experience and assigned responsibilities. Monitor anesthesia closely and accurately document heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, temperature, and other required information. Recognize changes in patient condition and communicate concerns immediately. Monitor patients throughout recovery and respond appropriately to complications. Maintain strict sanitation, disease-prevention, and patient-identification protocols. Help manage efficient patient movement through intake, preparation, surgery, recovery, and discharge. Assist with shelter animals, publicly owned pets, community cats, and animals from partner organizations. HCHS currently performs approximately 90 spay and neuter surgeries each week. Our clinic serves shelter animals, community cats, and pets belonging to families throughout Burnet and Llano Counties. This position must be comfortable working efficiently while never compromising patient safety or quality of care. Vaccination and Community Clinics Assist with high-volume public vaccination and microchip clinics. Safely restrain and handle dogs and cats of different sizes and temperaments. Maintain a calm and welcoming environment during busy public events. Shelter Medical Support Shelter Medical Support When not assigned to a surgery or vaccination clinic, this position will help support the medical and animal-care needs of the shelter.

Responsibilities may include:

Assisting with animal intake and initial medical assessments. Administering vaccines, medications, preventatives, and treatments as directed. Monitoring sick, injured, recovering, or quarantined animals. Maintaining complete and accurate medical records. Preparing animals for veterinary examinations and procedures. Collecting diagnostic samples and assisting with basic testing. Communicating medical concerns promptly to the shelter manager or veterinarian. Helping maintain treatment areas, medical supplies, and medication inventory. Assisting with feeding, cleaning, laundry, dishes, animal handling, and daily care when needed. HCHS operates with a small team. Although this is primarily a veterinary medical position, every employee must be willing to assist wherever help is most needed. Shelter Animal Care Responsibilities On days without a scheduled surgery or vaccination clinic, this employee will be assigned to the regular shelter animal-care schedule.

Shelter shifts will include:

Cleaning and disinfecting kennels, cat areas, equipment, and common spaces. Washing dishes and laundry. Preparing food and providing fresh water. Feeding animals according to individual instructions. Providing medications and treatments as assigned. Walking dogs and providing exercise, enrichment, and socialization. Assisting with playgroups, meet-and-greets, and adoptions. Observing animals for changes in health, behavior, appetite, or comfort. Reporting medical or behavioral concerns promptly. Assisting with animal intake, identification, vaccines, microchips, and basic examinations. Helping visitors and answering questions about available animals. Supporting foster placements, rescue transfers, transports, and adoption events. Assisting coworkers wherever needed to complete daily animal care. Other duties as assigned.
