Summary:

The Senior Veterinary Technician (Foster Care Center) is responsible for working in collaboration with the Medical Assistant Manager, veterinarians, and fellow team members to ensure the efficient operation of the Foster Care Center and the delivery of high-quality medical care to animals in foster placement and those receiving medical care at the shelter. This position serves as a senior technician resource for staff, volunteers, and foster caregivers by providing medical guidance, coordinating veterinary care, facilitating foster support, and assisting with training and daily operations. The Senior Veterinary Technician promotes a humane, safe, and sanitary environment for animals and people, maintains a positive public image of CAP, and helps ensure that the organization's mission, policies, and standards of care are consistently upheld.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Medical Operations Work closely with the examining veterinarians to ensure veterinary evaluations, diagnostics, treatments, and follow-up care are scheduled and performed in a timely manner. Assist in overseeing the daily medical care of animals housed within the shelter and Foster Care Center. Upon approval of the staff veterinarians and management, prepare, label, dispense, and document medications in accordance with CAP protocols and written veterinary instructions. Monitor treatment plans to ensure medical recommendations are carried out accurately and consistently. Assist veterinarians with examinations, diagnostics, treatments, sample collection, and other medical procedures as assigned. Work in conjunction with clinic staff to coordinate veterinary services for foster, shelter, and adopted animals as needed. Ensure that animals under medical care, including those entering or returning from foster care, progress through treatment plans and are moved through the organization in a timely manner. Consistently review and update medical communication logs and ensure appropriate medical tasks are completed by the end of each shift. Maintain accurate and complete medical records in accordance with CAP policies and veterinary standards. Ensure compliance with sanitation, biosecurity, and infection-control protocols throughout medical and housing areas. Foster Care Support Educate foster caregivers regarding proper animal care, treatment plans, medication administration, post-operative care, and other medical concerns. Provide guidance and support to foster caregivers regarding ongoing medical cases and treatment protocols. Coordinate care and communication with Foster, Transport, Rescue, and Adoption teams to support positive outcomes for animals. Participate in scheduled foster emergency phone coverage outside normal shelter hours. Provide medical communication support for foster families in the absence of the Foster Care Coordinator or other designated staff. Leadership and Team Support Serve as a senior technician by providing guidance, training, and support to veterinary technicians, assistants, volunteers, students, and foster caregivers. Assist the Medical Assistant Manager with onboarding and training of medical department personnel and volunteers. Promote a culture of professionalism, teamwork, accountability, and compassionate animal care. Help identify workflow improvements and communicate operational concerns to management. Assist in coordinating daily medical priorities and workflow in the absence of the Medical Assistant Manager. Administrative and Other Duties Attend staff meetings, training sessions, conferences, and professional development opportunities as assigned. Report unsafe conditions, equipment concerns, or facility issues to management. Assist with daily department operations and perform other duties as directed by the Medical Assistant Manager, veterinarians, or executive management.

Required Education and Experience:

Required high school diploma or GED. Minimum 3 years of experience as a veterinary technician in a veterinary clinic or animal shelter environment. Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) in the State of Texas preferred, but not required Graduate of an AVMA accredited veterinary technician program preferred, but not required Experience with PetPoint shelter management software preferred

Constant:

Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces. Includes working closely with others for a significant portion of the workday. Remaining in a stationary position, often standing for prolonged periods. Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers. Working with animals:

including retrieving animals from kennels; working with potentially aggressive animals that may bite, scratch, or otherwise cause injury; and working with animals with potential zoonotic diseases. Adjusting or moving objects up to 40 pounds in all directions.

Occasional:

May be expected to chase and catch animals that have escaped on occasion.

Environmental Conditions:

Includes noisy environments, including barking and other animal noises. Includes pungent smells from animal caretaking, including from feces, abscesses and other medical issues. Includes working with cleaners that contain bleach and other noxious chemicals. Includes working very near to co-workers. Includes working with animals that are sick and fractious. Includes small and/or enclosed spaces.

Required Skills and Abilities:

Must have a professional appearance and the ability to deal tactfully with the general public, staff, volunteers, foster caregivers, and other organizations. Must have excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. Must possess a humane and caring attitude concerning the overall treatment and disposition of animals. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to make sound decisions when management or veterinarians are not immediately available. Ability to prioritize tasks and ask for assistance when appropriate. Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced and at times stressful environment. Ability to provide training, guidance, and mentorship to staff, volunteers, and foster caregivers. Ability to maintain accurate medical records and ensure compliance with established medical protocols and procedures. Completion of Senior Veterinary Technician skill sheets and all preceding departmental skill sheets, as applicable. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and shelter management software such as PetPoint. Working knowledge of animal health, animal behavior, shelter medicine principles, and biosecurity practices.
