Position Information Job Title Instructor of English (9-months) Job Description An instructor's primary responsibility is to deliver high-quality instruction within their discipline, with a clear focus on achieving established student learning outcomes. In addition to teaching, instructors are expected to mentor and support students in progressing toward degree or program completion. Full-time instructors are responsible for a range of classroom and administrative duties that support the mission, goals, and objectives of Wilkes Community College, including participation in committee service and ongoing professional development. A reasonable and equitable teaching load will be determined collaboratively between the instructor and the departmental chair, in consultation with the division dean. This workload may include a combination of traditional classroom instruction, distance education, academic advising, professional development, curriculum development, and other related administrative responsibilities. Wilkes (main) Campus will be the primary teaching location, but instructors will be assigned teaching duties at the Ashe Campus and/or the Alleghany Center as needed. The full-time instructor reports directly to the department chairperson or dean of the division and works in concert with the lead instructor of the discipline. This is a full-time, 9-month position. Full Time or Part Time Full Time Essential Duties Summary Instructor's duties include: Planning, creating, and maintaining a classroom environment conducive to student learning. Encouraging the development of critical thinking skills through appropriate classroom exercises and assignments. Maintaining a high level of currency in the discipline, and incorporating innovative and creative instructional techniques in the classroom. Collaborating with the lead instructor in the creation of syllabi; the establishment of objectives, competencies, and assessments; and the selection of textbooks, periodicals, and other resources. Advising students toward completion of program, diploma, or degree goals and assisting students with job placement or college transfer. Participate in program and general education outcomes assessment for written communication and assist with the development and implementation of improvement plans. Being responsible for administrative activities relating to FTE reports, end-of-semester reports, grades, and other required reports, and doing so in a timely fashion. Communicating with students and administration through the technological framework provided by WCC including posting syllabi for all sections of all courses to the campus web portal, and regularly checking and responding to e-mail sent to the instructor via the campus web portal and messages sent to the college e-mail/voice-mail/telephone service. Maintaining one office hour per course up to five per week (generally one per day), posted on the office door and updated by semester on the campus web portal, at times which are convenient for student contact and which do not interfere with the college's regular meeting times. Referring students, as appropriate, to student support areas of WCC including Counseling and/or Student Support Services, the Academic Support Center, Learning Resources Center, Student Services, the Writing Center, etc. Attending commencement exercises, committee and task force meetings, and faculty meetings as scheduled. Fulfilling other responsibilities as assigned by the lead instructor, departmental chairperson, dean of division, or vice president of instruction. Required Qualifications Qualified applicants must have a completed master's degree with at least 18 graduate credit hours in the teaching discipline (English). Preferred Qualifications Experience teaching at the post-secondary level Experience teaching online Graduate coursework in rhetoric and composition and/or composition pedagogy Physical Demands Work is primarily performed in an academic setting, including classrooms and office environments with standard climate controls. Occasional travel, as well as early morning, evening, or limited weekend work, may be required. The physical and mental demands described as follows are representative of those that must be met by an employee in performing the essential functions of this job: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods, communicate effectively with students and colleagues, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and other instructional technology. The employee may occasionally be required to stand, walk, and move about the classroom or campus. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus for reading, grading, and computer work. The position may involve: Sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time Light lifting (typically up to 15-20 pounds) such as books, instructional materials, or equipment Occasional reaching, bending, or stooping This role does not typically involve exposure to hazardous materials or physically strenuous activities. Salary Grade Salary Salary Hiring Range $47,215 to $60,000 Commensurate with education and experience in accordance with the college salary plan.
