Aug 5, 2026 Job Description Job Description General Statement of Duties An employee in this class is responsible for providing interpreting and transliterating services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in the educational environment. The Sign Language Interpreter facilitates communication between deaf/hard-of-hearing students and hearing students, staff, teachers, administrators, and community members in classroom instruction, school activities, meetings, and other school-related functions. Work is performed under the general supervision of the classroom teacher, Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Exceptional Children's staff, and/or school administration. Errors in interpreting or communication access may significantly impact student learning, academic progress, and participation in the educational environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Provides accurate, impartial, and effective interpreting/transliterating services using American Sign Language (ASL), Signed English, Cued Speech, tactile signing, or other communication modalities appropriate to the student's needs. Facilitates communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and peers, teachers, staff, and other individuals within the school environment. Interprets classroom lectures, discussions, assemblies, extracurricular activities, field trips, meetings, and other school-related events. Studies lesson content, technical vocabulary, and instructional materials in advance to ensure accurate interpretation of educational content. Assists in implementing accommodations and communication supports as outlined in Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or Section 504 Plans. May provide tutoring, note-taking assistance, or reinforcement of instructional concepts under the direction of certified staff and the IEP team. Collaborates with teachers, administrators, related service providers, and families to support student success. Maintains confidentiality of student and staff information in accordance with FERPA, professional ethics, and district policies. Adheres to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct (CPC). Serves as a liaison to promote positive and cooperative relationships among students, staff, and families. May assist with teaching or promoting basic sign language awareness among staff and students. Participates in professional development and required training related to interpreting and deaf education. Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Demonstrated proficiency in the communication modality used by the student(s) served. Thorough knowledge of interpreting/transliterating techniques and practices. Working knowledge of child and language development, particularly as related to deafness and hearing loss. Competence in English grammar, syntax, spelling, and punctuation. Ability to interpret expressively and receptively at a rate commensurate with conversational speech and classroom instruction. Ability to maintain the integrity and intent of the speaker's message during interpretation. Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills when working with students, staff, parents, and administrators. Ability to function effectively as a member of an educational or IEP team. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment. Working knowledge of academic subjects and educational terminology being interpreted. Minimum Training and Experience Associate's Degree in Educational Interpreting or a related field from an accredited institution preferred. Minimum score of 3.3 on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) or equivalent qualification required by North Carolina law and district guidelines. Completion of interpreter training through an accredited program or TECUnit for Cued Speech Transliteration, if applicable. Previous experience interpreting in educational settings preferred. Licensure and Certification Requirements Must hold and maintain current licensure through the North Carolina Interpreter and Transliterator Licensing Board (NCITLB) in accordance with N.C.G.S. Chapter 90D prior to employment. Must complete annual professional development requirements related to interpreting as required by the local education agency and/or state regulations. Physical Requirements Ability to communicate effectively through expressive and receptive signing for extended periods of time. Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move between classrooms and school locations as needed. Ability to attend school-related activities and events, which may occur outside the regular school day.Position Type:
