Animal Services is a department of the Winnebago County government with intake of approximately 5,000 animals each year and Animal Services Officers responding to more than 10,000 calls for service annually. Under direction of the Animal Services Patrol Operations Manager, answers call regarding animals which are sick, injured, stray, abused, etc. and investigates by checking and updating dogs and cats for current rabies vaccinations. Enforces state and local animal control ordinances. Provides positive and educational interactions within the community for the benefits of pets, people and the organization. This position includes an attractive benefits package. Illustrative Examples of Work 1. Answers and investigates calls relating to animals that are loose, injured, stray, abused, etc., and impounding animals when necessary. 2. Humanely handles, captures, restrains, confines and transports animals, both domestic and wild, using special equipment, methods and techniques. May be required to use chemical immobilization and equipment, once trained. 3. Following established criteria, performs euthanasia of animals as necessary. 4. Responsible for the cleanliness and sanitization of transport carriers and vehicles used to perform work. May require handling of hazardous chemicals. 5. Be responsible for and follow applicable laws and policy with WCAS issued equipment, including vehicles, radios and animal care equipment. 6. Investigates animal bites by verifying animal vaccination and registration. 7. Provide education and enforcement of state statutes concerning animals such as Animal Control Act, Humane Care for Animals Act, Animal Mortality Act and local ordinances. 8. Assists State and local law enforcement agencies, Fire, Health, and Forest Preserve in necessary incidents. 9. Prepares and submits investigative reports, daily activity reports, collects evidence on animal-related cases. Issues citations for violations of laws and/or ordinances; testifies in court regarding citations. 10. Performs all duties in accordance with County policies and procedures. 11. Performs other duties as required or assigned. 12. Performs tasks as assigned within the facility during low activity months. 13. Regular attendance is required, overtime as needed/scheduled. Education and Experience  Completion of four years of high school or general education.  Previous work experience in a self-directed work environment.  One year of experience in an animal related field preferred.  Requires possession of a valid, violation free Illinois Driver's License.
