Description The Kennel Technician is responsible for the routine and technical services related to the maintenance, upkeep, and improvements of the shelter. The Kennel Technician cares for the health and welfare of the animals at the shelter through feeding, exercise, administration of medications, maintaining a healthy environment, and socialization. The position also provides responsive, courteous, and efficient service to the public. Schedules available Wednesday, Friday, Saturday 7am-2pm and Saturday, Sunday 7am-5pm Examples of Duties Essential Functions Performs intake functions when animals arrive at the shelter utilizing specified procedures, including intake documentation, administering vaccinations, assigning and placing in appropriate caging, collecting samples for testing and monitoring for and reporting suspected illnesses. Provides food and water to animals housed at the shelter. Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of the facility through scrubbing, spraying, and disinfecting all animal enclosures, floors/walls, food/water dishes, litter boxes, etc. and maintaining a clean and organized office space. Maintains communication with the public through telephone correspondence and greeting and assisting those that visit the shelter. Additional Duties/Responsibilities Other duties as assigned. Typical Qualifications Minimum Required Qualifications Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent Preferred Qualifications Two (2) years hands-on experience working in a shelter, rescue, or other closely related facility Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge in care and treatment of animals. Ability to comprehend, retain and apply County, State, and Federal policies, and legislation, i.e., local ordinances, procedure manuals, SDS sheets, safety manuals, and warning labels. Ability to operate various types of equipment - standard office equipment, computer, and basic knowledge of Microsoft Office software. Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a professional and friendly manner with customers, citizens, co-workers, and management. Ability to develop, interpret and implement local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence, Federal, State, and local regulations, SDS sheets, safety manuals, operating and repair manuals, etc.; and warning labels. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations. Ability to think quickly, maintain self-control, and adapt to stressful situations. Duties regularly require verbal communication using the English language, reading and reviewing records, operating standard office and shelter-related equipment, standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, climbing short ladders or stairs, grasping, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling. The position may involve exposure to animal dander, odors, waste, disinfectants, cleaning chemicals, noise, inclement weather, slippery surfaces, bites, scratches, animal-related injuries, zoonotic disease risk, and other environmental conditions commonly associated with animal shelter operations.
