Job Summary Are you passionate about animal health and welfare and enjoy working hands-on with aquatic animals? Apet is looking for an Animal Health Assistant to join our team and serve as an Animal Health Specialist with a primary focus on aquatics, while supporting small animal and bird health as needed. This position plays an important role in maintaining the health and well-being of the animals in our care. The Animal Health Assistant works closely with the Animal Health, Animal Care, and Operations teams to monitor animal health, support treatment plans, maintain accurate records, identify concerns early, and ensure proper follow-up and documentation. This is a hands-on role for someone who is observant, dependable, detail-oriented, and committed to high standards of animal welfare. Duties Serve as an Animal Health Specialist with a primary focus on aquatic animal health , while supporting small animal and bird health as needed. Conduct daily animal observations and identify signs of illness, injury, parasites, abnormal behavior, or other health concerns. Assist with diagnosing and treating animal health conditions and support treatment plans under the direction of the Animal Health Director or designated leadership. Prepare and administer medications as directed and monitor animals throughout treatment and recovery. Maintain accurate and up-to-date medication, treatment, skin scrape, and microscope records . Perform routine water chemistry testing and monitor water quality conditions in aquatic systems. Assist with receiving, identifying, acclimating, housing, feeding, and maintaining proper husbandry practices for aquatic animals, small animals, and birds. Maintain clean and appropriate tanks, filtration systems, enclosures, quarantine areas, and workspaces. Conduct routine internal animal health audits to help ensure continued readiness and adherence to established animal health standards. Maintain accurate animal health reports and documentation needed for Texas animal health meetings and other applicable reporting requirements. Partner with Animal Health, Animal Care, and Operations leadership on animal health concerns, treatment plans, ongoing monitoring, and follow-up. Proactively identify potential animal health, husbandry, water quality, or operational concerns and help ensure appropriate follow-up and documentation. Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment and follow all company policies, procedures, and safety requirements. Skills We're looking for someone who is passionate about animal care, comfortable working hands-on with animals, and able to recognize and communicate changes in animal health or behavior. Strong attention to detail, organization, communication, and teamwork are important in this role. Experience in aquatic animal care, animal health, veterinary assisting, zoology, biology, animal science, water quality testing, microscopy, or a related field is preferred.
