Morgue Mission:

Provide medical examiner and crime laboratory services of the highest quality in an unbiased manner with uncompromised integrity. : Provide clerical support in the HCIFS morgue. Review and verify documents. Assist families and funeral homes with decedent release. Retrieve and release decedents from coolers. Maintain daily decedent inventory counts. Ensure decedent fingerprints are taken prior to release. Maintain cleanliness of work areas and assist with daily laundry tasks.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Provide general clerical support in the morgue. Handle incoming/outgoing phone calls with funeral homes, families, and department staff. Review release documents for completeness and accuracy. Complete primary and secondary verification of case information in the case management system. Retrieve decedents from coolers and verify identification bands. Release decedent personal property to families or funeral homes. Maintain daily inventory count. Take decedent fingerprints when needed. Maintain clean work areas; assist with laundry responsibilities.

Education:

High school diploma or GED.

Licensure:

Valid Texas Drivers License; ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.

Additional Requirements:

Must register for and pass the

HRT Clerical Skills Test:

•Minimum 85% clerical aptitude

•Typing speed of 45 wpm with 85% accuracy Must pass criminal background check. Must pass drug/alcohol screening prior to hire and randomly during employment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Professional demeanor with diverse callers and coworkers.

Effective and respectful communication with pathologists, families, funeral home staff, law enforcement, and medical/legal audiences. Follow morgue and safety procedures; maintain chain of custody and confidentiality. Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and handle multiple responsibilities. Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations. Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office.

Preferences:

Bilingual (English/Spanish).

General Information Clerical Test Registration:

Candidates must register online for the HRT Clerical Skills Test. Invitation and instructions provided via email within 48 hours. Test must be completed within 5 business days. Scores automatically uploaded to application. Test may be taken once every 30 days; scores retained for up to 6 months.

Position Type & Hours:

Full-time, 40 hours per week. Work includes weekends and holidays.

Morgue setting.

Potential Exposures:

Contact with dead bodies, blood, bodily fluids, organs. Possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens, chemicals, unpleasant odors, loud noises.

Physical Demands:

Heavy work. Move decedents weighing 200+ lbs. using manual forklift/body lift. Long periods of sitting, standing, walking, stooping, and bending.

Background Requirements:

Candidates must pass a drug screen and background check. Convictions reviewed case-by-case; convictions will not automatically disqualify.
