Mission:

Provide medical examiner and crime laboratory services of the highest quality in an unbiased manner with uncompromised integrity.

Vision:

Provide consistent, quality death investigation and laboratory analysis. Create a technological strongpoint for legal agencies. Establish an academic training environment in forensic science. : Conduct neuropathology components of medicolegal death investigations (Texas Code of Criminal Procedure 49.25). Provide neuropathology consultation to Assistant Medical Examiners during autopsies and specialized examinations. Provide expert testimony in court on neuropathology subjects. Teach forensic pathology fellows, residents, medical residents, and students. Participate in quality assurance and improvement activities in the Pathology Division.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Conduct neuropathology examinations of brains, spinal cords, eyes, and other specimens; interpret gross and microscopic pathology. Review and synthesize medical records and police reports in the context of neuropathology findings. Prepare neuropathology reports for inclusion in full autopsy reports. Provide consultation to Assistant Medical Examiners on fresh and formalinfixed specimens. Provide microscopic neuropathology consultation as requested. Serve as expert witness in criminal and civil court matters. Attend depositions and pretrial conferences as needed. Participate in daily case assignment/review conferences and weekly QA/consensus conferences. Teach and supervise pathology fellows, residents, and medical students.

Education Requirements:

Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), or MBBS.

Licensure & Certification Requirements:

Licensed to practice medicine in Texas (prior to employment). Certification by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic pathology and neuropathology. Valid Texas Drivers License.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Expertise in forensic neuropathology, forensic pathology, general anatomic pathology, and broad medical knowledge. Ability to communicate effectively with lay, technical, medical, and legal audiences. Ability to dictate neuropathology findings for autopsy integration. Ability to give testimony in civil and criminal proceedings. Ability to express complex medical conclusions calmly and convincingly in adversarial situations. Excellent timemanagement skills; ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks. Basic Microsoft Office skills.

Preferences:

Two years experience in forensic neuropathology (hospital or medical examiners office). Experience interpreting postmortem CT or neuroradiology scans.

Work Schedule:

Full-time; Monday-Friday. Requires more than 40 hours per week regularly. Hours vary based on department needs. Must be available during severe weather events or emergencies.

Work Environment:

Office / morgue setting.

Potential Exposures:

Routine exposure to deaths resulting from violence, natural disease, hazards, and toxins. Exposure to biohazardous materials and offensive odors.

Physical Demands:

Medium work. Push, pull, lift up to 20 pounds frequently. Stand for extended periods. Don and doff personal protective equipment (including N95, gown, face protection, SCBA when required). Wear PPE for extended periods during detailed postmortem examinations.
