Job Description

The Correctional Officer/s will be responsible for the overall operation of the facility and the maintenance of a safe and secure environment for all staff. The ideal candidates will have a strong interest in working toward their professional career in law enforcement and have excellent communication skills, including the ability to effectively interact with staff, visitors, and the public. Corrections experience preferred but not required. Duties include, but are not limited to: Reviews post orders, directives, general orders, policies, and procedures for recent changes and confirms acknowledgement, understanding, and compliance. Monitors and controls access and egress to the detention area, excluding all firearms. Completes screening intake and classifies detainees. Arranges for medical attention or transport to a medical facility for an y detainee claiming or perceived to require medical attention. Conducts searches of all arrestees upon intake in accordance with policies and procedures. Conducts initial booking of inmates. Issues clothing, bedding, and personal items required for incarcertation. Monitors facility access to ensure that only authorized persons gain access. Assists officers, court personnel, and attorneys by answering questions regarding the status of detainees or inmates. Conducts random cell searches.
Required Skills:
Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. High School Diploma or equivalent required. College degree preferred. Must possess a valid Kansas Driver's License with good driving record. Must be a U.S. Citizen. Must undergo and successfully complete a thorough background investigation and personal interviews by agency personnel. If served in the armed forces of any country, must have the ability to demonstrate stability, reliability, and integrity, by having been Honorably Discharged. Ability to demonstrate reading and comprehension skills in the English language to at least the twelfth (12th) grade level. Must be fingerprinted and subjected to a search of local, state, and national records and fingerprint files. Must meet academic and physical requirements for completion of training required by the Ottawa County Sheriff. Must complete in-service training as required by the Sheriff, as well as a first aid course and CPR course. Must complete in-service training in fire prevention, evaluation of facility, and basic firefighting apparatus.
Physical Demands:
Frequently requires standing, speaking or hearing, use of hands and fingers as well as walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, and reaching, and occasionally requires sitting or climbing. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to frequently lift up to seventy - five (75) pounds.
Work Environment:
Work is performed in a jail setting. Subject to frequent interruptions with frequent amount of public contact. Noise level is moderate. Subject to potentially dangerous situations and scenarios.
