TRANSPORTATION SERGEANT MONTANA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS DEER LODGE, MT

JOB OVERVIEW
- This position is responsible for the overall safety and security of Montana Department of Corrections Transportation department. The Sergeant helps ensure the transportation department is operated for the safety of the public, as well as the incarceration, treatment and rehabilitation of the inmate population through supervising transportation staff and performing administrative duties. Supervise offenders, on and off property C onduct s thorough inspections and searches of inmates, buildings, and grounds Performs security observation and inspection Prepares documentation regarding institutional matters, such as incident reports, disciplinary documentation, counts and logs Operates security equipment Recognizes critical behavior and provides intervention for offenders Restrains and controls offenders Responds to emergencies Enforces and follows rules and regulations Ensures offenders' basic needs are met Supervise and direct work of at least 2 FTE Correctional Officers within assigned area. Maintain order, discipline, and security within assigned areas in accordance with relevant rules, regualtions, policies, and laws.
QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma and Basic POST Certification is required. Valid driver's license is required. Two years correctional officer experience is preferred. A knowledge of the functions, procedures, organization, and governing laws and regulations of the corrections system and the prison, modern security techniques, record keeping procedures. Skills in the use of modern security equipment, de-escalating volatile situations, and interacting with inmates effectively
PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICER INFORMATION
This position requires POST Basic Certification after attending training at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy and successfully completing one year of employment with the Department of Corrections. In addition to the training and experience requirements, to be POST Certified, the successful candidate(s) must: Be a citizen of the United States of America; Be at least 18 years of age; Be fingerprinted for a criminal history search; Not have been convicted of a crime for which s/he could have been imprisoned in a federal or state penitentiary; Be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background screen; Be a high school graduate or issued a GED or its equivalent; AND, Possess or be eligible for a valid Montana driver's license.

Prison Rape Elimination Act - Any person who has been convicted of engaging in or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse; or any person who has been civilly or administratively adjusted to have engaged in the activity as described are not qualified for this position. Tobacco Free - The use of all tobacco products, including smokeless tobacco products and tobacco substitutes is prohibited in Department of Corrections buildings. In secure care facilities possession of tobacco products is prohibited.

Training Assignment :
This agency may use a training assignment. Employees in training assignments may be paid below the base pay established by the agency pay rules. Conditions of the training assignment will be stated in writing at the time of hire.
