Job Description

Join Our Police Department Team The Police Department is seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Evidence Technician to perform duties under the general supervision of the Property and Records Manager . The Evidence Technician is responsible for maintaining the integrity, security, and chain of custody of all property and evidence held by the Police Department. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that evidence and property are properly received, documented, stored, maintained, released, and disposed of in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, court orders, and departmental procedures. Key Responsibilities Receive, maintain, secure, and, when appropriate, lawfully dispose of all property and evidence held by the Police Department. Maintain accurate evidentiary records and ensure the integrity and chain of custody of property and evidence. Organize and securely store property and evidence with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. Comply with court-ordered subpoenas, expungements, releases, and other legal requirements. Maintain ongoing communication with the State's Attorney's Office to assist in clearing cases and authorizing the release or disposition of property. Provide professional guidance and recommendations to police administrators regarding evidence, property, and related records. Remain current on applicable laws, State mandates, evidence-retention requirements, standards, and the Illinois Local Records Act. Organize and coordinate special dispositions, including property auctions and donations. Assist with evidence audits and the preparation and processing of weapon and drug destructions. Under the direct supervision of the Property and Records Manager, schedule, assign, and control work related to the maintenance of evidentiary records and ensure compliance with applicable legal standards. Make recommendations to the Property and Records Manager regarding changes in laws, regulations, policies, and evidence-retention schedules. Serve as a backup to the FOIA Specialist, including reviewing requests and responses and assisting with appropriate redaction of records. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications:
College-level coursework in criminal justice or a related field. Training or experience in property and evidence management. Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and standards related to property management, evidence handling, storage, retention, and records management. At least one year of experience in property and evidence management within a law enforcement agency or in a records-management environment. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Pay:
$26.92 - $29.27 per hour
