PART-TIME FIREARMS EXAMINER & TECHNICIAL REVIEWER / POLICE DEPARTMENT

This is an intermittent, 5-10 hours per week position. This is a part-time position with no fringe benefits.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Primary duties involve the verifications and technical reviews of Firearm physical comparison cases and reports involving the examination and comparison of bullets, bullet fragments, cartridge cases, firearms, and related evidence. May also perform technical reviews of other firearm-related cases, including serial number restorations, functionality examinations, and firearm measurements. May be called upon to examine and analyze physical evidence from criminal cases and prepare laboratory reports by performing complex forensic examinations of physical evidence related to firearms identification, including the examination of bullets, bullet fragments, cartridge cases, firearms, and related evidence. Prepares reports and/or appropriate records on all verifications, reviews, and examinations of evidence, which include descriptions of weapons or ammunition, results of test firings, and/or comparisons and other forensic examinations. Provides expert testimony in court regarding the results and conclusions of examinations. Participates in continuing training and education. Maintains current knowledge of appropriate forensic science testing procedures, methods, and relevant issues. Performs research and participates in discipline-appropriate proficiency testing. Reviews available forensic science and related journals and publications. Assists with the development of laboratory procedures and methods. May assist with method and equipment verification and validation. May assist with public presentations regarding crime lab activities. May be called upon to provide forensic technical assistance and perform priority evidence analysis. Conducts forensic training. Answers phone calls and performs general custodial tasks. Performs related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

Education Baccalaureate degree with science courses preferred. Experience At least ten years of forensic laboratory experience in identifying and classifying firearms, ammunition, and related evidence. Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and/or abilities may be considered. Knowledge, skills, and abilities Ability to communicate orally and in writing with attorneys, law enforcement personnel, vendor representatives, the Medical Examiner, forensic peers, Elected Officials, Department Heads, and the general public. Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment. Employment is contingent on successfully passing a full criminal background check.
