Under general supervision, the Digital Evidence Clerk performs a wide variety of specialized law enforcement support duties, including: inventory, storage, providing, destruction, and release of property and evidence. This position serves as a primary liaison between the Sheriffs Office and Local, State, and Federal law enforcement agencies, specifically regarding the processing and submission of digital evidence to the District and County Attorneys offices.
Specific Responsibilities Digital Evidence Submission:
Prepare, format, and submit all digital evidence packages to the District and County Attorneys offices for prosecution.
Agency Coordination:
Work directly with in-office staff to coordinate the processing, identification, and handling of digital evidence under the direction of the CID Lieutenant.
Inventory Management:
Log, classify, store, and release property/evidence to its rightful owner for court presentation and/or destruction/auction.
Security & Integrity:
Maintain evidence in a manner that ensures individual items are secure from theft, loss, or contamination and can be located in a timely manner.
Chain of Custody:
Maintain property reports and all other documentation associated with the chain of custody for all digital and physical property.
Disposal & Notification:
Ensure timely and legally correct notification of owners and the release/disposal of property recovered or seized by the Sheriffs Office.
System Operation:
Operate computer terminals to access case dispositions and information involving the classification and proper disposition of evidence.
Hazardous Disposal:
Coordinate the disposal of unclaimed property and special disposal of narcotics, weapons, explosives, and hazardous materials pursuant to law.
Training Support:
Provide in-service training to department personnel regarding the appropriate logging, packaging, and storage of property and evidence.
Liaison Duties:
Represent the Sheriffs Office at State and Local associations and maintain effective relationships with outside law enforcement agencies.
Regulatory Compliance:
Stay educated on local, State, and Federal laws involving evidence handling; to recommend and facilitate appropriate changes.
Facility Maintenance:
Maintain a clean and orderly storage facility.
Other Duties:
Performs related work as required (this list is not exhaustive).
Work Experience & Skills Knowledge:
Applicable policies and work methods associated with evidence inventory and control; federal, state, and local laws regarding storage and disposal; and automated law enforcement information systems.
Technical Ability:
Proficiency in standard law enforcement equipment, including computers and digital media platforms.
Judgment:
Ability to work independently, use good judgment, and interpret complex laws and codes.
Communication:
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, to establish effective working relationships with staff and the public.
Education & Requirements Education:
High School Diploma or GED (Required); College Degree (Preferred).
Licenses:
Texas Drivers License with a clean driving history.
Certifications:
Ability to obtain TLETS (Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications System) certification within six months of hire.
Background:
Must pass an extensive background check and drug screen.
