Regular Full-Time Position Overview The Firearms Examiner evaluates, test fires, and microscopically examines submitted firearms and related physical evidence, which may include hazardous biological or chemical substances. Operating under accreditation standards, this position restores serial numbers, performs distance determination testing, reviews NIBIN correlations, authors laboratory findings, and provides expert courtroom testimony in Firearms Identification.

Key Duties & Responsibilities Laboratory Analysis & Examination:

Inventory, evaluate, and test fire diverse firearms; perform comparative microscopic examinations of fired evidence components (bullets and cartridge cases); conduct serial number restorations and distance determinations.

Database & Quality Control:

Review National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) correlations; perform technical and administrative reviews of peer casework to ensure strict adherence to laboratory SOPs and accreditation criteria.

Expert Testimony & Consultations:

Provide expert witness testimony in legal proceedings; deliver technical consultation to police officers, prosecutors, and law enforcement agencies.

Method Development & Training:

Train onboarding forensic personnel; develop, test, and validate new laboratory testing procedures and analytical instrumentation.

The company is looking for:

Education:

Bachelor of Science degree in Forensic Science, Chemistry, or a related natural science (Biology, Physics, etc.) required.

Successful completion of a 3-semester credit hour (or equivalent) college-level statistics course approved by the Texas Forensic Science Commission.

Required Training & Experience:

Completion of a structured training program equivalent to the Association of Firearms and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE) Training Manual, the ATF National Firearms Examiner Academy (NFEA), or equivalent accredited laboratory training with comparative microscopy proficiency.

Ability to complete training and secure access authorization for the

IBIS/NIBIN

network upon hire.

Licensure & Certifications:

Forensic Analyst Licensure from the Texas Forensic Science Commission required (must obtain within 1 year of hire and maintain throughout employment).

Valid Class C Texas Driver's License required.

Physical & Technical Demands:

Capable eyesight for fine microscopic evaluations of test-fired evidence; strong oral/written communication skills for courtroom testimony and accreditation reviews.

Candidates must pass a drug screen and a background check. Convictions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis; convictions will not necessarily bar a candidate's employment. After an offer or conditional offer of employment is made, the employer may require the prospective employee to take a physical examination.
