Pay Rate:

$19.23 / hour Position Overview The IBIS Support Technician conducts technical forensic firearms examinations, test firing, serial number restoration, and specimen entry into the Integrated Ballistics Identification System (IBIS/NIBIN) within the Institute of Forensic Sciences. This role produces examination reports, conducts administrative casework reviews to maintain accreditation standards, assists with training new personnel, and provides expert witness testimony and technical guidance to law enforcement agencies and attorneys.

Key Duties & Responsibilities Firearms & IBIS Testing:

Inventory, document, evaluate, and test fire various types of firearms; enter specimen data and ballistic images into the Integrated Ballistics Identification System (IBIS/NIBIN).

Forensic Examinations & Restorations:

Perform serial number restorations on firearms; prepare official examination reports detailing findings.

Administrative Review & Accreditation:

Perform administrative reviews of casework to ensure full compliance with laboratory SOPs and ISO/IEC accreditation standards.

Expert Testimony & Technical Assistance:

Provide expert witness testimony in court proceedings and technical assistance to law enforcement personnel and prosecuting/defense attorneys.

Laboratory Training:

Assist in training new laboratory personnel on firearms processing and IBIS entry procedures.

Qualifications & Requirements Educational Mandate:

Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Forensic Science, Chemistry, or a related natural science (e.g., Biology, Physics) from an accredited institution.

Must have completed a 3-semester credit hour (or equivalent) college-level statistics course approved by the Texas Forensic Science Commission (TFSC).

Licensure & Certification:

Must comply with State of Texas Forensic Science Commission (TFSC) licensure requirements within one (1) year of hire.

Must complete required training upon hire to obtain authorization to access the

IBIS/NIBIN

network.

Driver Mandate:

Valid Class C Texas Driver's License with the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.

Core Competencies:

Strong written and oral communication, effective organization/time management, ability to prioritize multiple tasks, and proficiency in basic computer applications (Microsoft Office).

Physical & Visual Demands:

Capable visual acuity to evaluate test-fired bullets; physical ability to lift/handle heavy items up to 40 pounds; ability to safely test fire all types of firearms on a routine basis; capacity for extended computer work.

Candidates must pass a drug screen and a background check. Convictions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis; convictions will not necessarily bar a candidate's employment.
