The New Mexico State Police investigate crimes within, and beyond city and county jurisdictions. Often times they are called upon to use specialized resources to confront crimes all over the State of New Mexico. Why does the job exist? The Public Safety Investigator is part of the Crime Scene Team that is within the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau. The Crime Scene Team responds throughout the state to crime scenes that are largely related to violent crimes or scenes where forensic evidence can be searched for. The Public Safety Investigator fills a key role in the search, location, collection, and analyzation. How does it get done? Coordinates and conducts tactical analysis of complex criminal/financial cases by collecting, organizing, and analyzing large amounts of diverse information to identify the critical elements of a case. Assists law enforcement agencies around the state to participate in investigations and operations, including, but not limited to, identifying evidence, handling evidence, scene investigation, conduction of interviews, acquisition of ballistic evidence, organizing leads, and providing feedback to law enforcement officers. Creates documents for wanted suspects, crime trends, officer safety, and investigative findings. Develops presentations to explain work findings and educates others about the role and duties of the investigator. Responds to a firearm-related crime scene, triages cartridge cases from scenes and from seized firearms, acquires specialized images of those casings. Provides testimony in administrative, civil, criminal, or other proceedings concerning methodology for drawing conclusions and investigative findings. Investigators must be comfortable presenting to groups of people with varying levels of education and experience in law enforcement. Educates and mentors less experienced investigators on methods of investigation through training. More experienced investigators teach less experienced investigators how to sift through gapped, conflicting, and redundant information to identify suspects, develop intelligence, and provide leads in investigations. Attends trainings and specialized classes to become educated on the chain of custody, crime scene investigation, and evidence handling procedures, as well as to triage evidence. Maintains confidentiality of law enforcement sensitive documents and confidential sources and adheres to policy and procedures set forth by local, state, and federal governing agencies. Assists prosecutors in determining charges in criminal court proceedings and provides expert testimony in criminal or other proceedings concerning investigative and analytical findings. Prepares detailed reports and oral briefings, which include charts, graphs, and spreadsheets to reflect information gathered through interviews and evidence collection. Employs various sophisticated research methods to compile evidence of criminal acts and provide comprehensive facts and details on criminal suspects/subjects which aid/result in their identification, location, and apprehension. Minimum Qualification Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education. Employment Requirements Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and fingerprinting in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations; and is conditional pending results. Continued employment is contingent upon remaining felony free, per Section 5.12.1.1 of the Criminal Justice Information Systems Security Policy. In addition, the selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a current Defensive Driving Certificate from the State of New Mexico; or pass and receive the Defensive Driving Certificate within six (6) months of date of hire. This position is designated as safety-sensitive and is subject to applicable drug and alcohol testing requirements. A pre-employment drug and alcohol test is required as a condition of employment. Employees occupying safety-sensitive positions are also subject to random drug and alcohol testing throughout their employment, in accordance with applicable federal and state laws and Department policy. Working Conditions Significant personal demands include shift work, twenty-four/seven (24/7) on-call status, including weekends and holidays. The work environment is both in the office and out in the field, regardless of time of day and weather. There will be technical work done at a desk computer and out in the field at indoor/outdoor scenes of violent crime. A fast-paced work environment with competing demands, strict deadlines, multiple tasks, and exposure to the criminal element. Required to travel out of town without prior notice for classes and special assignments. Attentiveness and intensity are critical to ensure accuracy and to minimize errors.
