SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD BRIEF DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this position it to provide for the safe movement and welfare of school aged pedestrians prior to and at the dismissal of the school day at designated cross walk locations. This is accomplished by being constantly alert to vehicular traffic and the activities and movement of children towards, in, to and across streets, with the objective of assuring the safety of the children, observing gaps in the traffic and leading the pedestrians across the roadway or intersections, communicating traffic and crossing rules and other information to pedestrians, recording and reporting to law enforcement the license numbers of vehicles disregarding traffic signals and laws and the reporting of malfunctioning traffic or warning signs to the appropriate authority.

Position operates in heavy traffic. Must be able to traverse a 150' walkway at the rate of 4 feet per second and climb curbs and medians to twelve (12) inches in height unassisted.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

# Code Essential Functions 1 L Regular and reliable attendance in compliance with given schedules is a mandatory requirement of this position. Schedules may be subject to change with or without advance notice. 2 L Ensures the safety of school children at assigned locations; keeps children behind curb until it is safe to cross the roadway; escorts children across roadway; instructs children in the proper use of traffic regulations as they relate to pedestrians; provides general assistance to children as needed. 3 L Provides customer service to the general public, and communicates direction effectively with the general public; using approved hand signals, signs or by normal operation of traffic signals. 4 S Takes down vehicle identification information on traffic violators and presents information to superiors or to police officer; reports malfunctioning traffic or warning signals.

JOB CLASSIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Formal Education Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency. Experience No experience required
