THE POSITION

Become a Sanitarian with the Department of Environmental Protection and help safeguard vital water resources! DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports the regulation of public drinking water systems to uphold safety and compliance across assigned areas. The role focuses on inspections, reporting, and guidance for water suppliers. As a Sanitarian, you will perform the following duties:

Survey Inspections:

Conduct sanitary surveys and follow-up inspections of public water systems and review findings with suppliers

Compliance Review:

Identify violations, prepare notices, and issue field orders to address urgent public health concerns

Emergency Response:

Respond to water system emergencies including contamination events, floods, and treatment failures

Technical Guidance:

Provide direction to water system owners and operators in understanding and applying regulations

Record Management:

Input inspection results and maintain organized records across multiple data systems

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

Full-time employment Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Travel required for site visits

Telework:

You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. You will have to report in office 1 day per month. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Ebensburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

Successful completion of the training program for the Sanitarian Trainee; or Any combination of experience and/or training which affords the applicant the required knowledges and abilities.

Special Requirement:

You must be in possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

You must be able to perform essential job functions. This position is subject to the provisions of a collective bargaining agreement or memorandum of understanding. You must be eligible for selection in accordance with merit system employment regulations.
