Job Summary The Assistant Fire Chief performs a variety of administrative, supervisory, technical, and operational duties in assisting with the planning, organization, direction, and implementation of fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency medical services, training, and emergency management programs. The Assistant Fire Chief serves as the second-in-command of the Fire Department and assumes command of the department in the absence of the Fire Chief. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Serve as Acting Fire Chief during the absence of the Fire Chief. Supervise subordinate officers and personnel. Develop, implement, review, and evaluate departmental policies, procedures, programs, and training initiatives. Direct and participate in major departmental operations. Respond to fires, EMS calls, rescues, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergencies. Assume incident command responsibilities when necessary. Assist in planning and administering Fire and EMS programs. Assist with preparation and administration of the departmental budget. Maintain departmental discipline, professionalism, and accountability. Address employee concerns and grievances. Prepare and submit reports regarding departmental activities and operations. Assign personnel and equipment based on operational needs. Attend meetings, conferences, and professional development events. Represent the Fire Department in local, county, state, and professional organizations. Serve on committees and task forces as assigned. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Applicants must:

Be at least 18 years of age. Possess a High School Diploma or GED. Possess a valid Alabama Driver's License. Be a United States Citizen. Have no felony convictions. Be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.

Experience Requirements Internal Candidates:

Must have served as a Captain with the Greenville Fire Department for a minimum of three (3) years.

External Candidates:

Must possess equivalent supervisory and command-level fire service experience. An Associate Degree or higher in Fire Science, Public Administration, Emergency Management, or a related field is preferred. Required Certifications Applicants must possess certifications recognized by the Alabama Fire College (IFSAC or ProBoard): Firefighter I Firefighter II Apparatus Operator - Pumper Apparatus Operator - Aerial Fire Instructor I Fire Instructor II Fire Officer I Fire Officer II Fire Officer III Fire Inspector I Hazardous Materials Technician Incident Safety Officer Additional Requirements Fire Officer IV (Preferred) Fire Inspector II (Required within one year of appointment) Hazardous Materials Incident Commander (Preferred) Alabama Licensed EMT-Paramedic or eligibility for Alabama reciprocity through NREMT-Paramedic certification

100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800 Responsibilities Assist the Fire Chief in developing and implementing emergency response strategies, policies, and procedures aligned with NFPA standards. Lead firefighting operations, including fire suppression, hazardous materials incident response, and confined space rescue activities. Participate actively in emergency response calls as a firefighter, providing first aid, CPR, and basic life support as needed. Oversee the operation of fire apparatus and specialized firefighting equipment to ensure readiness and safety during incidents. Coordinate incident command functions during emergencies, managing personnel deployment and resource allocation efficiently. Ensure all personnel adhere to personal protective equipment (PPE) use, respiratory protection protocols, and environmental protection and hazardous materials response procedures. Supervise training exercises on firefighting techniques, HAZMAT protocols, rescue operations, and NFPA standards compliance. Support the maintenance of medical emergency response capabilities, including vital signs assessment and emergency medicine procedures. Promote a culture of safety through regular inspections of fire safety measures, equipment checks, and adherence to environmental protection guidelines. Facilitate communication with local emergency services and community stakeholders during incidents to ensure coordinated efforts. Requirements Proven EMT experience with certification in first aid, CPR, and basic life support; additional emergency medicine training is preferred. Extensive knowledge of HAZMAT protocols, fire suppression techniques, firefighting specialized equipment operation, and incident command systems. Experience participating in emergency response calls as a firefighter with demonstrated skills in rescue operations and hazardous materials incident management. Ability to operate fire apparatus safely under various conditions; mechanical knowledge is advantageous. Strong understanding of NFPA standards related to fire safety, environmental protection hazardous materials response, and confined space rescue operations. Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with experience in heavy vehicle operation; familiarity with aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) or forest fire management is a plus. Excellent physical fitness for heavy lifting, prolonged standing or walking during emergencies; ability to assess vital signs accurately under pressure. Effective communication skills for incident command coordination; leadership qualities for supervising team members during high-stress situations.
