Job Description
Responds to emergencies and performs duties related to fire suppression, rescue, emergency care during ground ambulance transport; other tasks as appropriate and in accordance with level of training. Assist with departmental training; travel to North Slope communities as needed to provide support and training. This position is a regular member of the North Slope Borough Fire Department and is authorized to act under Alaska Statute 18.70.The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. Shown are duties intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. Respond to emergencies and perform firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical duties as assigned. Travel to and work in other NSB communities to provide support and training Assist Department Instructors, as needed, to assure training course is taught according to lesson plan and as scheduled. Assist with coordinating special projects as needed and assist as assigned. Assist with the NSB Fire Department Explorer Program as needed. Maintain training skills and certification through participation in applicable education opportunities and training as required. Maintain inventory, readiness of equipment and supplies. Operate, clean and inspect emergency, fire, rescue, medical and life saving tools, equipment and facilities. Maintain certifications and personal records of certification. Perform other duties as assignedKnowledge of NSB Fire Department policies and procedures, firefighting and emergency services techniques and procedures, and related safety and legal issues. Knowledge of fire ground operations safety. Knowledge of pre-hospital practices. Knowledge of methods and techniques to present training program. Knowledge and ability to use emergency response vehicles, specialized fire department and personal protective equipment and gear, rescue equipment and emergency medical equipment and tools. Skill in planning, organizing and scheduling technical training classes. Skills in establishing rapport with small and large groups to facilitate effective training opportunities. Skill in effectively presenting information in a classroom environment.
High school graduate or G.E.D/or, a combination of 12 years of education and related work experience. Ability to obtain Firefighter/EMT Trainee required certifications within six months of hire. Valid Alaska Driver's License that meets North Slope Borough insurance criteria. Career Ladder position. For each requirement obtained based on the attached schedule, the incumbent will receive pay increases for levels within each level. If the incumbent fails to renew certification as required, the North Slope Borough will consider expired certificates as not valid; therefore, the incumbent's rate of pay will be adjusted accordingly and position title. This is a career ladder position; the incumbent must obtain certification as required by and within time periods specified in the attached chart for advancement. For each requirement obtained based on the attached schedule, the incumbent will receive pay increases for levels within each level.
