The City of Chandler Fire Department will be conducting its promotional selection process for the position of Fire Engineer. Qualified applicants will be placed on an eligibility list that will be valid for 2 years. This opportunity is only open to current regular status City of Chandler Firefighters. Current City of Chandler employees may only hold one position and are not eligible for additional part-time or secondary positions within the City of Chandler.

Classification Summary:

The primary function of an employee in this class is to provide safe and efficient operation of fire apparatus and other specialized firefighting apparatus in response to emergencies. A Fire Engineer performs specialized work in operating and maintaining a variety of automotive and other firefighting equipment including pumper truck, ladder truck, and self-contained breathing apparatus, in response to fire alarms and other emergency scenes. This position participates in firefighting activities, fire prevention inspections and training, public education, equipment and quarters maintenance, and provides emergency medical care to sick and injured persons. This position is required to work back-to-back 24-hour shifts, holidays, weekends, and rotating shifts as required. Essential Functions (list not exhaustive):

• Operates and drives fire-pumping and aerial ladder apparatus to alarms;
• Regulates proper pressure requirements and adherence to vertical and angular limitations of ladders as dictated by establishing operation principals;
• Performs the duties of a Firefighter when not operating an apparatus;
• Checks motorized apparatus for proper operation and general condition;
• Performs routine operator maintenance of care of equipment and apparatus;
• Responds to calls for emergency medical services, and renders medical care following the Arizona Scope of Practice appropriate to their Emergency Medical Care Technician (EMCT) certification level;
• Responds to and renders assistance in emergency cases;
• Cleans and inspects equipment and apparatus after returning from a fire;
• Inspects equipment and apparatus and notifies superior officer of any defects;
• Keeps fire station, equipment and grounds in a clean and orderly condition;
• Participates in training activities and instruction sessions;
• Acquires and retains a thorough knowledge of the City, including streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards and related items;
• Performs various public information or education tasks;
• Enters inspection, training and (on occasion) fire and emergency medical service calls into the records management systems and electronic patient care reporting system;
• Completes all relevant documentation related to apparatus check-off, maintenance and repairs;
• May respond to emergency calls for specialized service such as hazardous materials, confined spaces rescue, extrication and technical rescues that include high angle, below grade, swift water, trench and collapse rescues;
• May respond to non-emergency calls for infant car seat inspections, bike helmet inspections, aggressive bee complaints, fire prevention demonstrations, and related activities;
• Deals with social service related areas of emergency response by assisting victims and relatives of victims of traumatic events.
• Assists in the development of other personnel regarding the duties of the Fire Engineer position.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED equivalency; and
• At least three (3) years of experience as a regular, full-time Firefighter with the Chandler Fire Department; and
• Valid State of Arizona Emergency Medical Care Technician's (EMCT) Certification; and
• Firefighter I & II Certifications; and
• Successful completion of Chandler Fire Department Engineer Development Course OR successful completion of the following college level courses: a) Fire Apparatus (FSC 201/117 or equivalent) b) Fire Hydraulics (FSC 107/118 or equivalent)
• Successful completion of the "over the road check off" for Engine and Ladder apparatus during the most recent Engineer Development Course; and
• Valid Arizona Driver's License with acceptable driving record; and
• Must meet the qualifications to wear a tight-fitting respirator by passing a medical evaluation test in accordance with

CFR 1910.134

by hire date and must maintain certification; and

• Must meet and maintain the National Fire Protection Association standard 1582, Chapter 5.1 Essential Job Tasks
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

HIRING PROCESS

1) Full-time paid Chandler Fire Department firefighting experience will constitute up to 5% of the final score. Fire Department experience outside of Chandler will be counted at half value. Proof of firefighting experience with a jurisdiction other than Chandler must be submitted with the online application for such experience to be credited. This proof must be in the form of a letter from the Fire Chief's Office or the Personnel/Human Resources Office of the other jurisdiction. 2)

Written Examination :

Eligible applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to a multiple-choice written test. A score of 70 or higher is required to pass the test, currently scheduled for October 12, 2026 . Total score will have a weight of 20%. 3)

Performance Test:

Applicants who receive a 70 or higher on the written test will be invited to participate in the performance tests. The performance test is comprised of three (3) sections. The pumping section (score weight of 30%), the ladder section (score weight of 30%), and the tools section (score weight of 15%. Total score for the Performance Test will have a weight of 75%. The performance tests are currently scheduled for the week of October 26 - November 4, 2026 (depending on the number of applicants). 4)

Chief's Interview:

Interviews for all candidates with a passing score of 70% or higher will be held at the discretion of the Fire Chief. All individuals who pass the written test and performance tests with a score of 70% or higher may be invited to an oral interview by the Fire Chief or his/her designee. The examination process may vary if determined to be necessary. Those candidates completing the promotional process with a passing score of 70% or higher in each section will be placed on an eligibility register.
