Job Description 1. Job Description Per Diem Firefighter/EMTs provide firefighting, rescue, and EMS on an as-needed basis, often with little or no direct supervision. Personnel respond to all emergency and non-emergency calls using local, State, and National guidelines. Additional duties may be assigned by the Fire Chief or department officers.
Firefighting:
Respond to all fire types; perform suppression, rescue, salvage, and overhaul; operate hoses, ladders, and hand tools; assist with ventilation, forcible entry, and search-and-rescue.
EMS:
Respond to medical emergencies; perform patient assessments and administer BLS care per Massachusetts Statewide Treatment and Transport protocols and Berkshire Health Systems medical control directives; operate EMS equipment per
MA DPH AR 5-401
; transport patients; complete ePCRs accurately and promptly.
General:
Daily apparatus and equipment checks; restock apparatus post-call; maintain clean station; participate in training and professional development; maintain certifications; represent the department professionally; follow all department and Town of Sandisfield policies. 2. Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum age: 18
- Valid driver's license
- Valid National Registry EMT-B (minimum); must maintain per MA OEMS policy
- Massachusetts EMS license (EMT-B minimum), or obtain within 90 days of hire
- Valid CPR for Healthcare Providers (AHA or equivalent)
- Firefighter I required; Firefighter II preferred
- Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations

- Department orientation and skills evaluation
- Successful CORI review prior to employment and annually for re-appointment 3.
Physical Demands (Approximate ranges; not all-inclusive; demands vary by incident type.) Members must be capable of sustained aerobic effort in full gear; lifting, dragging, and carrying up to 125+ lbs. (often team-assisted); repeated muscular endurance tasks (compressions, carries, tool operations); short bursts of high-force work (forcible entry, extrication); stair and ladder climbing with equipment or patients; crawling in confined spaces; and maintaining balance on uneven or elevated terrain. Carried loads range from 25-75 lbs. (EMS bags, stretcher) to 45-75 lbs. (turnout gear + SCBA). Environmental exposure includes cold (ambient temps as low as below 0°F, ice, wet gear) and heat stress inside heavy gear in summer (90°F+), day and night. Members must be medically fit consistent with OSHA respirator/SCBA standards and free of impairment per OEMS rules. Standby comprisesroughly 60-90% of a shift; response, transport, training, and equipment checks constitute the remainder. 4. Scheduling Variable shifts of 8-24 hours, typically starting at 0800. Shifts are available via the department scheduling system. Members must provide a minimum of 24 hours of availability per month to remain active. Additional shifts may be offered during holidays, weather events, or major incidents. 5. - Massachusetts certification only. Out-of-state EMS licensure (any level) is treated as EMR. AEMT or Paramedic is treated as EMT-B due to department authorization with MA OEMS. Rate may be adjusted based on experience up to a maximum of $30.00/hr. No overtime, paid leave, or guaranteed hours. 6. Employment Classification
- Per Diem Firefighter/EMTs are at-will, hourly employees of the Town of Sandisfield.
- Employment is not guaranteed for any minimum hours; members may be dismissed at any time with or without cause or notice.
- Not eligible for health insurance, paid leave, retirement contributions, or unemployment compensation outside of scheduled work.
- Members are covered under applicable workers' compensation laws.
- Classification complies with Massachusetts employment law.
