Typical Duties:

Under the direct supervision of a Captain and/or Lieutenantperforms all duties of a firefighter including protecting life and property by performing firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and fire prevention duties. Maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

1. Minimum 18 years of age 2. High school graduate or GED equivalent 3. Must possess a valid driver's license (Michigan or out-of-state) with a good driving record and no felony convictions. Applicant must be able to obtain a valid Michigan Driver's License within 30 days of employment. 4. Michigan Firefighter Training Council Firefighter I and II certification. 5. Licensed Emergency Medical Technician according to the provisions and/or requirements mandated by the State of Michigan at time of Hire. EMT Students encouraged to apply. 6. Prior to being hired, candidate must complete and pass a Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT), physical, drug, psychological, respirator fit tests, and extensive background check. 7. All applicants must successfully pass the Firefighter written examination through EMPCO.net and have Mount Clemens Fire Department selected. Test scores must be valid at time of application. Essential Job Functions Responds to fire calls, rescue and medical calls and other emergencies. Participate in fire containment, fire suppression, and auto extrication or other rescue activities. Operates a wide range of firefighting and rescue equipment, apparatus, tools, vehicles and other implements utilized in the line of duty. Responds to emergency medical calls. Employs life-saving techniques at a basic life support level. Maintain firefighting and rescue equipment and apparatus in a ready status at all times. Completes standard preventive maintenance duties according to established schedule and keeps related records. Assists in procuring and maintaining emergency medical supplies and equipment. Properly collects and disposes of infectious waste generated at emergency scenes. Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, clean up and removal of debris. Assists in the maintenance of fire station facilities and grounds to ensure compliance with departmental standards. Completes custodial and housekeeping duties. Participates in training programs and drills. Receives training in assigned areas of responsibility, including emergency medical and multiple casualty incidents, fire responders, and related subjects. Keeps up to date of modern firefighting methods and current issues through continued training and professional growth. Maintains cooperative relations with other city departments and internal departmental personnel. Attend workshops, and training sessions as directed. Assists in conducting fire prevention activities, developing pre-plans for firefighting, and rescue activities. Presents programs to the community on safety, medical and fire prevention topics. Performs other duties as required. Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications Requirements include the following: Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques used in fire suppression, prevention and rescue operations and associated safety procedures. Knowledge of first responder techniques such as resuscitation, basic life support procedures, first aid and Emergency Medical Technician procedures and practices. Basic knowledge of fire codes and other laws and regulations governing fire prevention. Skill in the operation and maintenance of an array of firefighting and medical responder tools, equipment and apparatus and other implements utilized in the line of duty. Ability to adhere to an established command structure in standard and emergency situations and the ability to work effectively under stress in emergency conditions. Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgement, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with other firefighters and rescue personnel and the public. Ability to work a 24-hour shift, including weekends and holidays as assigned. Ability to use basic office equipment such as telephone, calculator, copier, fax and computer with applicable software applications such as word processing and specialized department software, as well as email and internet. City employees must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of their position without excessive absences. In addition to the above requirements, all City positions require the ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language as necessary for the position, including the ability to follow written and oral instructions. Physical Demands and Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee's environment can range from an office setting to highly dangerous fire suppression situations. Physical demands, therefore, range from sitting in an office or vehicle to the potentially enormous physical exertion associated with firefighting. While in the office, the employee is frequently required to communicate verbally in person and by telephone, write and read. While firefighting, the employee is required to travel to other locations, stand, walk, run, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and lift and/or move items of heavy weight. While at fire scenes, the employee may be exposed to extreme heat, chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, vibration, moving mechanical parts and outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in the office but may become extremely loud in the field.
