This position works under the general guidance and direction of the Fire Department superior officers to apply fire suppression methods to protect life and property from the hazards of fire. Performs rescue from a variety of hazardous situations and responds to releases of hazardous products to protect lives, property and the environment. Performs safety inspections, public safety education and maintenance of buildings, apparatus and equipment. Performs basic life support skills and extractions. While direction is given by superior officers, work requires initiative on the part of the firefighter and the ability to accept responsibility when no senior officer is immediately available. 2027 hiring range: $87,767.68 to $105,501.76 per hour depending on qualifications and experience. Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls to extinguish or control fires. Conducts fire prevention inspections and pre-fire planning of buildings. Maintains fire apparatus and equipment Attends regular and assigned training to maintain and upgrade firefighter skills. Performs as driver/operator of fire apparatus. Performs general maintenance work pertaining to upkeep of Fire Department apparatus, equipment and buildings. Attendance during regularly scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary. Effective and respectful communication and interactions with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and citizen customers. Performs other related functions as apparent or delegated. Maintains positive professional working relationships with all staff levels, other jurisdictions and outside agencies, and the general public. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. This position will work primarily in the field. The work environment may at times be noisy with elements of personal danger in dealing with emergency situations. This position works closely with others.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Must comply with organizational and departmental policies. Must obtain and maintain a valid Class B MN driver's license within six months of hire date. Must be licensed through the NREMT as an Emergency Medical Technician Coon Rapids Fire personnel cannot be an active member of any other fire department while serving on the Coon Rapids Fire Department. Must obtain and maintain State of Minnesota Firefighter license. Pass Psychological Exam, Medical Exam, Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), and background check. The City of Coon Rapids operates under a point preference system, which awards points to qualified veterans to supplement their application. Ten points are granted to non-disabled veterans on open competitive examinations; 15 points are awarded if the veteran has a service connected compensable disability as certified by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (USDVA). To qualify for preference for a competitive exam, you must have a passing score for the position and be a qualified veteran.
