Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Fire and Rescue Division Head and Station Chief. THIS IS A PART TIME POSITION AND IS ELIGIBLE FOR 401K AND RETIREMENT.
Position Responsibilities Responds to incidents and disasters as a firefighter; performs necessary work related to fire suppression. Responds to incidents and disasters to provide vehicle extrication and rescue services. If certified as an EMT-B, provides basic life support techniques and first aid procedures based on patient assessment and in accordance with established guidelines and written or verbal instructions from physicians. Maintains and operates emergency vehicles and equipment to include daily truck check-offs, reporting of vehicle and equipment deficiencies, cleaning of vehicle and equipment, minor equipment maintenance, and station duties. Enters incident reports, training, and any other information deemed necessary into a data base; files reports and records; maintains departmental data. Participates in and conducts educational programs to promote all hazard preparation to include life safety and fire prevention. Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member. Performs related tasks as required To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Qualifications Considerable knowledge of firefighting methods and techniques; county geography and locations of roads and streets; and knowledge of equipment and supplies employed in extrication of patients and accident victims. Thorough knowledge of emergency medical care techniques and procedures; thorough knowledge of basic life support methods, procedures, and equipment; thorough knowledge of medical terminology; thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, practices, techniques, and equipment required for emergency medical treatment. Ability to perform duties in accordance with established fire command and emergency procedures and techniques, ability to work with a diverse socio-economic population, based on the unique situations encountered; ability to respond quickly and calmly in emergencies and stressful situations; ability to drive safely in adverse conditions and according to motor vehicle laws; ability to communicate effectively in a tactful and firm manner with the public; ability to deal with stress and death and dying patients; ability to accurately record services provided on required forms; ability to work with co- workers, law enforcement personnel, other fire and rescue agencies, medical personnel, patients and the general public; ability to maintain vehicles, equipment and facilities; ability to maintain confidentiality of patient contact; ability to operate a personal computer and standard office productivity software; ability to perform general emergency medical treatment.
Physical Requirements:
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives, exposure to vibration, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g., business office, light traffic). Education, Experience, and Special Requirements High school diploma or GED with coursework in firefighting and rescue services, along with a minimum of 1 years documented experience with a fire rescue agency in which you performed the tasks listed above.

North Carolina Firefighter II North Carolina Vehicle Rescue (VR) North Carolina Emergency Vehicle Driver (EVD) Class B Driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina (if out of state, must be equivalent) or be able to obtain within 30 days NIMS Incident Command System (ICS) Levels 100, 200 and 700; CPR BLS Provider.
Preferred certifications:
NC Driver Operator, North Carolina EMT-B or Emergency Medical Responder.

NC401k The County contributes 1% of employees' gross salary into the 401(k) account regardless of the employee's deferral amount. In addition, the County matches employee deferrals up to an additional 4%. Vacation Leave Regular full-time employees earn 13.5 days of vacation leave per year. With each 5-year increment of employment, vacation accrual increases. Sick Leave Regular full-time employees earn 12 days of sick leave per year. Paid Holidays County employees receive paid holidays annually. The Board of County Commissioners may adjust the holiday schedule as deemed necessary.
