Job Description

General Statement of Duties Assists higher-level attorneys in providing general legal services for the County administration, School administration, the Board of Supervisors, the School Board, and all other boards, commissions, authorities, and agencies of the County. Performs legal research, prepares opinions, and represents the County in legal proceedings. Performs other duties as assigned. Essential Duties The Henrico County Attorney's Office is looking to hire an attorney to join our human services practice group, which provides a wide range of in-house legal services to DSS and other agencies. This attorney will regularly appear in court and directly manage client relationships.
Specific job duties will include:
Litigating cases in the County's Juvenile and Domestic Relations, General District, and Circuit courts and state courts of Virginia on behalf of DSS and other clients Managing significant caseload, including interviewing witnesses and preparing and reviewing exhibits, legal research, and evidentiary motions Advising and counseling DSS and other clients regarding emerging and ongoing matters, both litigation and transactional Reviewing legislation and court decisions impacting client agencies and advising to ensure compliant policies and practices Handling other matters and providing support to colleagues and other practice groups as assigned The ideal candidate will possess outstanding advocacy and communication skills, exhibit good professional judgment, and have a proven track record of working cooperatively and effectively in a team-based environment. Applicants should have a strong academic background, excellent research and writing skills, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, public officials and the general public, and a desire to serve the community. Demonstrated interest in local government is preferred. At the time of application, applicants must have a Juris Doctor degree, and the successful applicant must be a member of the Virginia State Bar in good standing by December 14, 2026. This position may be filled at the Assistant County Attorney I, II, III, or Senior level depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate and the needs of the office at the time of hire. Salary will be commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will join a collaborative, dynamic office of professionals working closely with each other and their clients to positively impact the community. The Department wishes to fill this position at the Assistant County Attorney I level but may fill at the II, III, or Senior level depending on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The expected hiring range will be at the lower end of the listed pay scale and commensurate with experience. Must be licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Valid driver's license to perform assigned duties at at various locations. A criminal history record check and fingerprinting is conducted on all persons conditionally offered employment, including a conditional offer of initial employment, or a conditional offer to promote, demote, or laterally transfer an employee. Minimum Requirements Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA); OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
