LAW CLERK - CRIMINAL DIVISION

Employment Opportunity

The City Attorneys Office is seeking a qualified law student (2L or 3L) or recent law school graduate for an in-person Criminal Law Fellowship during the Fall 2026 semester (September through December). Working on-site under the direct supervision of the Prosecution Division, this hands-on role bridges the gap between classroom theory and real-world courtroom practice.

This position focuses on the research, preparation, and litigation of criminal misdemeanor and infraction cases. Candidates will have the opportunity to gain direct courtroom experience under Utah Supreme Court Rule 4-807 (Law Student and Law Graduate Legal Assistance).

Key Responsibilities & Learning Opportunities

Conduct legal research, draft pleadings, and prepare criminal misdemeanor and infraction cases for court.

Conduct client/witness interviews, participate in case negotiations, and assist prosecutors with trial preparation.

Courtroom Practice (Rule 4-807): Under attorney supervision, eligible certified clerks may directly appear in court, present arguments, negotiate cases, and conduct hearings and Class B/C misdemeanor trials on behalf of the prosecuting authority.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Rule 4-807 Requirements

Education Status:

Current 2L or 3L law student in good standing (having completed at least one full year / two semesters of law school) or a recent ABA-approved law school graduate preparing to take the Bar exam.

Coursework Prerequisites:

To appear in court for criminal evidentiary hearings under Rule 4-807, candidates must have completed and passed courses in Evidence and Criminal Procedure.

Certification:

Must be eligible for student/graduate certification pursuant to Utah SCRP Rule 4-807.

$27.00 Hourly

Work Location:

In-Person at the City Attorney's Office (no remote option).

Term:

September 2026  December 2026 (Fall Semester).

Schedule:

Part-time (hours determined upon hire).
