Chandler Police Department 2026-B Police Lieutenant Promotional Process

•Only sworn Chandler Police Sergeant employees are eligible to apply.

•The City of Chandler Police Department is currently seeking qualified individuals to create a list for the full-time position of

POLICE LIEUTENANT.

This opportunity is only open to current eligible City of Chandler Police Sergeants.

Classification Summary :

The primary function of an employee in this class is to plan, supervise and review the activities of all personnel assigned to a section of the Police Department. This position is responsible for the administration of a functional section or acts as duty commander of the Police Department. An employee in this class performs the duties of other employees in the Public Safety Department as required or as assigned by supervisory personnel. Employees may be delegated assignments in specialized areas such as field operations, neighborhood services, criminal investigations, professional standards, administration, or other assignment.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor's Degree in a related field, or current enrollment in a Bachelor's Degree program with the requirement to complete the program within 2 years of promotion date; if an applicant doesn't have a completed degree but is in the process of obtaining one they must present a form of documentation (e.g. a letter of acceptance, enrollment verification or transcript showing enrollment date) at the time of application, an endorsement letter from your current supervisor or most recent supervisor if recently changed. This letter should include witnessed evidence of mentorship, informal leadership, qualities demonstrating competencies for the Lieutenant position. A copy of the letter must be attached to the application and, at least 2-year's of experience at the rank of Police Sergeant with the Chandler Police Department, AZPOST Certification; and Valid Arizona Driver's License with acceptable driving record; and

Hiring Process:

The 2026 Lieutenant process will be as follows (dates, times and location information will be forthcoming): 1. 4-hour lieutenant development course 2. Commander Presentation and Oral Board 3.

Assistant Chief Oral Board NOTE:

Candidates must successfully achieve a "highly recommend" from the Commander Oral Board to move on to the Assistant Chief's Oral Board. The eligibility list will be ranked based on overall performance in all hiring process categories. The testing date is TBD . 3.

Chief Interview:

The Police Chief will conduct a final interview. The Chief will be given the names of the top candidates. The Chief has the right to select any candidate interviewed for promotion, regardless of list order. If any candidate fails the Chief interview, the candidate will be removed from the eligibility list and notified. The process may vary if determined necessary. This position is a regular, full-time position and is subject to a one-year probationary period. Per Rule 12.1.C The probation period may be extended one or more times by the Department Director in coordination with the Human Resources Director, but the extended probationary period shall not exceed in total the length of the initial probationary period unless the employee agrees to further extensions. This position requires a bachelor's degree, candidates who do not currently possess a degree must be currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program at the time of application and be required to complete the degree requirements within two years of promotion or be subject to progressive discipline.
