Police Sergeant MISSION:
The Members of the Olathe Police Department will guard the life, property, and constitutional rights of all, pursuing justice with compassion and respect. The men and women of the department will strive to establish collaborative partnerships which build and foster trust and understanding. The Olathe Police Department, Police Sergeant, performs a variety of technical, law enforcement and supervisory duties to ensure the safety and welfare of the community in compliance with Federal, State, and local Town laws. The job is considered Essential Personnel and will be required to work a variety of schedules in a 24-hour, seven day a week period, including nights, weekends, holidays, and during and following natural disasters and emergency situations. As well as on-call time as needed.

LOCATION
Olathe Police Department, 420 S. Horton Ave. This position is NOT eligible for hybrid or remote work location.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High School graduate or equivalent
- P.O.S.T. Certified or be able to possess certification within one year of hire
- Possess and maintain valid driver's license with acceptable record
- No Felony or Domestic Violence convictions
- Pass Background Investigation, Aptitude Test, Typing Test, Psychological Test, Drug Screening, Polygraph, Oral Boards, and DOT Physical
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Three or more (3+) years law enforcement experience.
- Meets physical fitness standards (DOT Compliance)
- PTO/FTO certified
- CIT certification
- Must be able to wear a standard issued police uniform with all applicable gear.
- Additional instructor certifications
- Ability to mentor, lead, and grow fellow officers
- Spanish speaking
SALARY RANGE
$37 - $41 per hour (D.O.E.), Complete benefit package.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Duties and/or responsibilities may change at any time with or without notice.
- Assist with effective supervision and overall management and coordination of law enforcement activities.
- Assist with managing personnel and administration activities to include, in part, policy and procedural review and identifying and conducting training as needed.
- Assists with supervising and directing the activities of staff and functions; makes recommendations regarding hiring, discipline, termination, or advancement of employees.
- Assist with Officer and staff schedules, including reviewing leave requests, at times, to ensure appropriate staffing.
- Guide, train, and develop officers in the accomplishment of their duties and professional growth. To include assisting with writing and conducting evaluations.
- Respond to and resolve sensitive and complex community and organizational inquiries, complaints, and requests from Town citizens.
- Patrol and respond to a variety of criminal activities requiring law enforcement intervention; ability to evaluate the situation and determine the most appropriate course of action.
- Pursue or apprehend suspects and criminals; make arrests which may involve physically restraining or subduing individual(s) and the possible use of deadly force; conduct interviews and protect crime scenes for processing; as well as processing suspects.
- Assist with establishing and implementing community relations service programs. As directed, research, assess needs and establish specific programs to address neighborhood law enforcement, administrative, or operational issues.
- Foster a climate of positive morale, motivation and interpersonal relationships with officers and department staff. Assist with developing and implementing rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to advance the mission, goals and objectives that provide effective police services to the Town of Olathe.
- Ability to communicate ideas effectively. Ability to listen and understand directions, information and ideas presented verbally and in writing. Ability to handle a variety of customer service issues with tact and diplomacy in a confidential manner .
- As directed, establish priorities for the completion of work and monitor employee progress in accordance with sound time-management methodology. Performs a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others.
- Ability to identify gaps in direction and proactively seek clarification to ensure alignment with command intent and operational objectives.
- Perform proactive Police work including traffic enforcement, animal control, and continuing criminal investigations.
- Serves as the Chief's designee during their absence and performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge of leadership techniques, principles and procedures to assign, schedule, supervise, train and evaluate the work of assigned staff. Knowledge of office systems, practices and administration.
- Thorough knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services. This includes setting and meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
- Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, government regulations, and the democratic political process.
- Knowledge of common safety rules, regulations, procedures and practices; to include effective restraint techniques, basic first aid and CPR.
- Evaluates the best method of research and then exercises appropriate judgment in establishing priorities and resolving complex matters. Consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
- Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships with employees, managers, and representatives from other departments and organizations. Shares knowledge with staff for mutual and departmental benefit.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
The physical demands listed below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. This position requires frequent lifting, carrying, walking, standing, kneeling, crouching, climbing or balance with the ability to lift over 50 pounds. Hand/eye coordination for computer use and work in the field, vision for writing reports and data entry, hearing and listening to communicate with others and frequent speech communication. This position is subject to standing and/or sitting for long periods of time and at times in inclement weather and has occasional dealings with stressful situations and angered individuals. Performance of essential functions will require at times exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, weather, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, fire, traffic hazards, toxic agents, explosives, firearms, violence, disease, or rude/irate persons.

$83,768.00 - $92,824.00 per year
