This position is ideal for a skilled law enforcement professional who understands the unique nature of small-community policing and is willing to serve in a hands-on leadership role. The Chief of Police is expected to be an active and engaged presence in the community while overseeing all administrative and operational functions of the department. The successful candidate must be capable of balancing modern law enforcement standards, administrative responsibilities, and proactive community engagement while also functioning as a "working Chief" who is willing to assist with patrol operations and calls for service when needed.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and oversee all operations of the Police Department. Develop, implement, and maintain departmental policies, procedures, and professional standards. Provide leadership, mentorship, and accountability for department personnel. Maintain positive working relationships with citizens, businesses, schools, local government officials, and neighboring law enforcement agencies. Manage department budgeting, purchasing, equipment, and resources responsibly. Respond to calls for service and assist with patrol operations as necessary. Ensure compliance with all state and federal reporting requirements. Oversee records management, evidence handling, and department documentation. Coordinate with local, county, state, and federal agencies when appropriate. Promote community policing and maintain a visible and approachable presence within the community. Handle critical incidents, emergencies, and crisis situations with sound judgment and professionalism. Handle city ordinance enforcement
Qualifications:
Missouri POST certification, or ability to obtain certification. Demonstrated law enforcement experience with progressively increasing responsibility. Strong desire and willingness to serve as a "working Chief" in a small-town environment. Leadership experience preferred, including supervisory, command-level, administrative, or prior chief experience. Have an understanding of Missouri Revisor of Statues Chapter 590 to include 590.500 through 590.502 the "Officers Bill of Rights". Strong understanding of patrol operations, officer supervision, and police administration. Knowledge of Missouri law enforcement reporting requirements and professional standards, including interaction with agencies such as the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Missouri Attorney General's Office, and federal level agencies. Familiarity with the Missouri Sunshine Law and proper information management practices. Ability to communicate effectively with the public, elected officials, employees, and outside agencies both verbally and in writing. Ability to make sound decisions in complex or high-pressure situations. Commitment to ethical leadership, professionalism, and community trust. Minimum of 5 years of experience as a police officer. Must successfully pass a background investigation.
