The next Chief must have experience with training law enforcement professionals, administering a small to medium sized department, budgeting, as well as handling inter-agency cooperation. The position requires vision and the ability to execute measurable strategies in achieving enumerated departmental goals.

The Police Chief must possess:

Thorough Knowledge of

• Law Enforcement Principles, Practices, Methods, and Equipment.
• North Carolina Law Enforcement Training and Standards.
• Relevant State and Federal Laws, Local Ordinances, Written Policies of Police Department.
• Physical, Economic, and Social Characteristics of the Town. Considerable Knowledge of
• Town's Personnel, Purchasing and Budgeting Policies and Procedures.
• Application of Information Technology as pertains to Police Work.
• Team Building Skills, Counseling, Coaching, Motivation, Communication, and Performance Evaluation with Subordinates. Skill and ability to
• Collaborative Conflict Resolution.
• Use Firearms and Other Police Equipment; and skill in Self-defense Tactics.
• Evaluate the Effectiveness of Police Operations and Institute Improvements, Including All Administrative and Supervisory Functions.
• Provide Vision and Clarify the Departmental Mission by Leading and Inspiring Confidence Among Subordinate Officers to Develop a High-Performance Team.
• Plan and Direct Special Programs/Events Related To Law Enforcement.
• Prepare Clear and Concise Reports and Make Effective Public Presentations.
• Establish/Maintain Effective Working Relationships with City Departments, Elected Officials, Law Enforcement Agencies, Employees, and the General Public.
• Act with Sound Judgment in Routine, High Pressure, and Emergency Situations.

Graduation from BLET, Associates in Criminal Justice or Related Degree, Bachelors Degree Preferred supplemented by advanced courses in police administration and considerable management experience of a progressive responsible nature in law enforcement work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license and completion of the minimum requirements established by the North Carolina Justice Training and Standards Council for certified law enforcement officers. Prefer advanced law enforcement certification.
