Essential Functions 1. Works at traffic gates, directs cargo deliveries, and maintains registers of activities. 2. Inspects outgoing traffic to prevent unauthorized removal of cargo from property. 3. Patrols buildings, grounds, docks, and warehouses on foot and in a patrol vehicle and maintains detailed patrol activity sheets. 4. Reports all possible threats and hazards. 5. Warns violators of rule infractions such as smoking, loitering, or carrying forbidden articles; detains or expels violators from the property. 6. Performs radio-desk operator duties when required. 7. Gathers information and collects evidence on any incident, accident, or property damage and timely prepares written reports that are complete, accurate, and concise. 8. Perform speeding and parking enforcement. 9. Responds to all unusual activities or events that require a police presence such as labor disputes, environmental activist issues, civil unrest, or natural disasters. 10. Assists in gathering information that could be used in investigations of criminal activities and disturbances occurring on Alabama Port Authority properties. 11. Assists state and federal authorities as required. 12. Performs essential functions as a law enforcement officer with full arrest powers. 13. Maintains ethical standards and ensures accountability and transparency in all actions and decisions. 14. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Required Knowledge:
Must meet the requirements of the Alabama Peace Officers' Standards and Training Act. Ability to stay calm and exercise sound, independent judgment in stressful and/or high-risk situations. Ability to deescalate situations. Certification or Licensure Requirements Must be certified by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission Academy. PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be physically able to drive a patrol vehicle and to safely carry, handle, and use a hand gun, shotgun and radar gun; to frequently lift, move or carry objects or materials up to carry 25 pounds and be able to push/pull 50 pounds of force occasionally and 30 pounds frequently; to exert significant physical force in order to either remove an individual from a potentially life threatening situation or physically restrain, control, or incapacitate an individual from causing harm to self, others or property (weights moved vary and could reach 200lbs.); to use sufficient manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to operate firearms and equipment; to climb stairs and navigate inclines and uneven surfaces; to reach above head, kneel, bend, stoop, jump and crawl; to run occasionally and meet Police Academy physical requirements for certification; and to sit and stand for extended periods.
SENSORY AND PERCEPUAL ABILITIES
Must have the visual acuity sufficient to identify data, people, and things; read printed and electronic text; discern colors necessary for traffic enforcement and evidence identification; and operate a vehicle safely under varied conditions, with or without corrective lenses. Must have the hearing acuity sufficient to detect and localize sounds relevant to officer safety and duty performance—including radio transmissions, verbal commands, conversational speech, approaching vehicles, and environmental cues—with or without amplification devices, in varied environments including high-noise settings. Must have the ability to communicate intelligibly in writing and by speech in person and over radio/telephone.
COGNITIVE AND PSYCHOLOGICAL DEMANDS
