IU POLICE DEPARTMENT
(UA-PD-IUBLA) Department Information Indiana University (IU) Public Safety pursues IU's commitment to providing the greatest degree of safety for all members of the IU community, consistent with the university's mission and environment, applicable legal and professional standards, and available resources. IU Public Safety directly oversees the IU Police Department, University Environmental Health and Safety, and Emergency Management and Continuity with a team of approximately 300 dedicated staff on a 24/7/365 operational basis across all campuses. Job Summary Performs non-law enforcement duties for Indiana University Police Department (IUPD) including radio dispatch duties, security assignments for buildings and events, and special assignments that necessitate the presence of IUPD but not the presence of a sworn Police Officer. Liaises with other workers and are briefed on the situation and issues of the day. Keeps the department and the other workers advised on situational developments as appropriate. Works closely with faculty, staff, students, and visitors from a variety of backgrounds. Observes and reports suspicious activity, can approach individuals, and enforces university policy without compromising personal safety, and must call for a sworn officer to detain or arrest. Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required Currently enrolled as a full-time student at Indiana University and in good academic standing with a 2.5 GPA while in the program.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required Possess a valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire. OTHER Required 21 years of age upon graduation from the Police Academy. SKILLS Required Proficient communication skills. Working Conditions / Demands The role frequently requires the ability to remain in a stationary position and communicate effectively. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the working environment; handle or operate objects, controls, or tools listed above; ascend/descend ladders or stairs; position self to move at lower levels; and discern scents. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and detect how far away an object is. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation. This position requires the ability to pass a battery of physical and psychological tests. This position requires the ability to pass an intensive background investigation. This position requires the ability for a person in this role to be a U.S. citizen or become a U.S. citizen prior to graduating from the Police Academy. This position requires the ability to maintain full-time student status. Additional Information July 26th - 30th, 2027 are mandatory attendance for Cadet Orientation week. Those that are selected for the cadet program (new and returning cadets) are required to attend in Bloomington, Indiana. Cadets do not have police authority. Those who successfully perform their duties and maintain academic and program standards, may be considered for entry into the IU Police Academy.
