City of Girard Police Department Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the command staff of the Girard Police Department, the Police Officer is a non-exempt position under FLSA which protects the life and property, and preserves order for the citizens of Girard. This position enforces all federal, state and local laws and ordinances, performs patrol duties, enforces traffic laws, and investigates crimes and accidents. This employee should possess excellent communication, public relation, and organizational skills.

Essential Functions:

Enforces all federal, state, local laws and city ordinances; Patrols the streets of business districts and residential neighborhoods; Investigates suspicious conditions and complaints; Searches for, collects and identifies evidence found at crime scenes; Arrests individuals who violate laws and city ordinances; Prepares and gives testimony and appears in court as arresting officer; Investigates and intervene in domestic disputes; Directs traffic and issues citations for traffic law violations; Operates radio transmittal equipment and communicates with dispatcher; Answers citizens complaints and takes necessary corrective action; Performs animal control duties and investigates complaints with the city; Prepares and completes reports in a timely fashion; Advises the public about laws, city ordinances and provides general information; Attends schools and seminars to maintain proficiency and certifications; Operates all department equipment and firearms with extreme proficiency.

Assists other departments as the need arises; Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned;

Experience:

No previous experience is required, but one to three years of law enforcement experience is preferred. This employee must be at least 21 years of age and is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well with six months to one year of employment.

Education:

A high school diploma or GED is required. This position requires a valid Kansas Driver's License, and graduation from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training center within one year of employment. This employee must maintain 40 hours of continuing education annually.

Technical Skills:

A working knowledge of federal, state, local laws and city ordinances. Firearms, CPR, law enforcement techniques, mathematics and chemicals for drug testing purposes are required. This employee must be able to operate radar equipment, firearms, patrol vehicles, communication equipment and other law enforcement equipment. The ability to read and interpret reports, written instructions and excellent communication, organizational and public relation skills are required.

Problem solving:

Problem solving is a major factor in this position. This employee encounters problems with domestic violence, victim trauma, collection of evidence and civil despites.

Decision making:

Decision making is a factor in this position. This employee makes decisions about making arrest, investigation crimes and accidents, issuing citations and performing daily duties in the safest and most efficient manner.

Supervision:

This employee works under the supervision of the command staff of the police department and has no supervisory duties.

Financial Accountability:

This employee is responsible for the safe operation of departmental equipment but does not participate in the annual budget process.

Personal Relations:

Daily contact with the general public, co-workers, supervisory personnel, and interaction with other departments is expected.

Working Conditions:

Adverse working conditions exist within this position. Exposure to human blood and body fluid, hazardous chemicals and all types of weather conditions is expected. This position contains an element of risk to personal safety. 12 hour shifts with every other weekend off.

Physical Requirements:

Pay:

$17.44 per hour Expected hours: 36.0 - 48.0 per week
