LEGISLATIVE POLICE OFFICER

(Temporary Session Hire) Carson City, Nevada Salary up to $131,711 (employee/employer paid retirement plan) The Legislative Counsel Bureau (LCB) is seeking a diverse pool of qualified candidates for the position of Legislative Police Officer within the Administrative Division. The LCB is a nonpartisan, legislative service agency that provides professional, technical and administrative support to the Nevada legislature, which convenes biennially in odd-numbered years for 120-day sessions and for rare special sessions during the interim periods. The Legislative Police serve and protect all legislative employees, visitors and the buildings and property of the LCB. This is a temporary full-time position located in Carson City, Nevada, with an estimated start date of January 1, 2027. Ongoing intermittent or full-time employment may be possible at the conclusion of the 84th Legislative Session, subject to departmental needs.

Position Description:

Under the general supervision of the Chief of Legislative Police, or a designee of the Chief, the Legislative Police Officer will perform a variety of law enforcement functions and protocols to ensure the safety of employees, visitors and property. Responsibilities of the Legislative Police Officer may include, without limitation:

• Patrolling all LCB buildings and grounds to enforce LCB regulations and applicable state and city laws and maintain order;
• Providing security services for legislative meetings and other authorized events held within legislative buildings and on legislative grounds;
• Maintaining a secure environment for legislators, legislative staff and members of the public in all legislative buildings and on legislative grounds, including, without limitation, controlling and monitoring access to legislative buildings;
• Providing dignitary protection and transportation for legislators, ensuring safe movement between facilities, off-site locations and official functions;
• Working cooperatively with local law enforcement agencies in accordance with interlocal agreements to support coordinated security and response efforts;
• Performing investigations related to incidents occurring within legislative buildings, on legislative grounds or involving legislative staff;
• Monitoring legislative buildings and grounds through surveillance systems and physical inspections to identify, deter and respond to security risks;
• Interacting professionally with legislators, legislative staff, and members of the public while maintaining a secure and orderly environment;
• Performing other law enforcement responsibilities as assigned to meet the protection and security needs of the Legislature and the LCB;
• Completing ongoing training as necessary to maintain POST certification and ensure readiness for a 24‑hour operational environment; and
• Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

The Legislative Police Officer will be selected with a special preference given to the candidate's training, experience and aptitude in the field of law enforcement.

A qualified candidate must have:

(1) a valid driver's license; (2) at least 10 years of experience as a peace officer; and (3) a current certification as a Nevada Category I or II peace officer or current certification equivalent to a Nevada Category I or II peace officer from another state that has reciprocity with Nevada POST. • Experience preparing and presenting clear and concise reports;
• An understanding of the unique law enforcement needs inherent of a legislative environment;
• The ability to lift and move medium to large items weighing up to 50 pounds, employing proper safety techniques; and
• The physical capability to perform tasks such as walking, standing or sitting for extended periods, crouching, gripping, holding, pushing, pulling, bending and reaching overhead.

Salary:

The annual salary for this position is based upon a Grade 42, which has a salary range of $87,570 to $131,711 under the employee/employer paid retirement option. An employer paid contribution plan is also available with a reduced salary in lieu of an employee contribution. Actual starting salary will be based on experience.

Working Conditions:

The work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions, and the position requires availability for varied shifts. Overtime may be required during legislative sessions and certain other periods as necessary to meet the demands of the Nevada Legislature. When overtime is worked, the Legislative Police Officer may earn compensatory time that can be taken at a later date or be paid for the overtime, consistent with the LCB Rules and Policies and subject to budgetary limits. Occasional in-state and out-of-state travel may be required. Such travel may be outside normal business hours.
