POLICE OFFICER
POLICE OFFICER The City of Portland is currently hiring police officers to attend the upcoming Police Academy, with the opportunity to start before the academy date. We are also accepting lateral officer applications on a continuing basis. About the
Police Department:
With an authorized strength of 158 sworn officers and 59 civilian staff members, the Portland Police Department is the largest municipal law enforcement agency in Maine. In addition to responding to more than 80,000 calls for service each year, the Department fields an experienced Criminal Investigations Division including a forensics component, a robust Community Policing Unit, a regional Emergency Communications Center and a substantial number of specialty teams/special capabilities. Specialty teams include a Hazardous Devices Unit, Dive Team, Crisis Negotiators, Special Reaction Team, and a Canine Unit. Special capabilities include a nationally recognized Mental Health Co-Responder Program as well as accident reconstruction, arson investigation, and victim services. The Department also provides patrol services on Peaks Island and at the Portland International Jetport and assigns personnel to the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and an FBI Safe Streets Task Force. Lateral Applicants:
$10,000 signing bonus available to fully certified law enforcement officers. The Portland Police Department welcomes full-time certified law enforcement officers from Maine and beyond. We offer salaries commensurate with years of police service, and our hiring process is expeditious and accommodating. Minimum Requirements:
Be a high school graduate or equivalent. Must have either two years of post-high school employment or three years of post-high school education or a combination of education and employment totaling three years. Additionally, you must have a valid driver's license, a good driving record, and good mental and physical condition. Applications accepted until filled. Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory criminal background check.
Salary & Benefits:
This is a union position, PBA, with a starting pay rate of $33.25/hour. For more information about compensation with the City of Portland, please refer to the union specific pay plans and agreements.
