Job Description

Description We are looking for an experienced Attorney/Lawyer to provide strategic leadership for a litigation practice focused on complex issues at the intersection of law, emerging technology, and public interest advocacy. This role is based in Washington, District of Columbia, and offers the opportunity to guide high-impact matters involving artificial intelligence and biotechnology while working closely with clients, experts, and mission-aligned partners. The ideal candidate brings experienced courtroom judgment, strong relationship-building skills, and the ability to translate technical developments into effective legal action.
Responsibilities:
  • Direct and oversee the litigation function, providing guidance to attorneys and support staff while coordinating closely with clients and external counsel on impactful legal matters.
  • Design and advance case strategies that respond to developing legal risks in artificial intelligence and biotechnology, including affirmative claims and amicus participation.
  • Cultivate connections with prospective clients, affected individuals, and nonprofit or advocacy organizations to identify matters aligned with the organization's mission.
  • Work alongside scientific and technical specialists to assess emerging developments and convert complex subject matter into practical legal arguments.
  • Act as a spokesperson for the organization in court proceedings, policy conversations, public events, and media engagements when appropriate.
  • Maintain strong working relationships across legal, scientific, and policy communities to support collaboration and broaden strategic influence.
  • Monitor relevant litigation and regulatory developments, then incorporate key outcomes and trends into ongoing case planning and organizational priorities.
  • Handle litigation related to requests connected to the organization's work, including drafting filings, managing discovery, and supporting motion practice.
  • Travel occasionally within the United States for team gatherings, retreats, and external events, typically a few times each year.
  • Take on additional responsibilities as needed to support evolving organizational and litigation priorities. Requirements
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • At least 15 years of litigation or other court-centered legal experience, including relevant clerkship experience.
  • Demonstrated strength in civil litigation, including motion drafting, legal briefing, discovery, and overall case management.
  • Ability to develop creative legal approaches in support of mission-driven objectives and complex emerging issues.
  • Comfortable working both independently and in close collaboration with a small, highly engaged team.
  • Proactive, adaptable, and organized approach to managing multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills for engaging clients, co-counsel, experts, and external stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with public-interest matters involving biosecurity, AI safety, science policy, or technology regulation is valued, as is experience with plaintiff-side litigation or government enforcement work.
