Associate Attorney
Job Description
OVERVIEW
The Associate Attorney is the entry-level attorney role at J. David Tax Law and serves as the day-to-day point of contact with the Internal Revenue Service, state departments of revenue, and other taxing authorities for assigned cases. The Associate Attorney is responsible for managing a personal caseload from inception through resolution or closure, working in close partnership with various departments to deliver protection, professional representation, and peace of mind to every client. Associate Attorneys build the legal, analytical, procedural, and client-service skills that prepare them for advancement into Senior Attorney and beyond. Success at this level is measured by sustained KPI performance, demonstrated independence, sound judgment, and consistent alignment with the firm's core values. The expected start date for this position is October 26, 2026.RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as the primary point of contact with the IRS, state departments of revenue, and other taxing authorities on all cases in personal inventory. Manage assigned caseload and drive consistent forward progress on every case toward resolution or closure. Review and update case strategy on each matter, identifying issues, options, and next steps. Conduct financial analyses and develop resolution strategies tailored to each client's circumstances and best interests. Draft and submit filings, audit packets, financial and resolution packets, and other work product to taxing authorities. Document all case activity thoroughly, including calls, actions taken, next steps, and billable time, to ensure transparency and continuity. Communicate clearly and professionally with clients, colleagues, taxing authorities, and other departments. Provide guidance to assigned Legal Assistants on case progress, documentation needs, and information required from clients so updates reach clients in a timely manner. Maintain efficient response times to incoming emails, voicemails, and phone calls. Manage caseloads with precision, confidentiality, and adherence to the highest ethical standards. Take ownership of tasks, manage deadlines imposed by federal and state agencies, and adapt to shifting priorities. Demonstrate empathy for clients navigating tax issues, responding thoughtfully under pressure. Actively seek and apply feedback from mentors and supervisors to develop legal judgment and case-handling skills. Participate in firm training programs, mentorship sessions, and continuing legal education.QUALIFICATIONS
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school. Licensed member in good standing of the Virginia bar. Authorized to represent taxpayers before the IRS. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and efficiently by phone and email. Self-motivated, self-directed, and persistent in working through problems to identify solutions. Client- and customer-service focused. Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize, multitask, and manage a caseload of competing deadlines. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat. Ability to perform efficiently under periods of stress while retaining composure.Job Type:
