Job Overview:
We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Deputy Public Defender to join our legal team. In this vital role, you will advocate for clients facing criminal charges, ensuring their rights are protected and justice is served. Your expertise in various areas of law, combined with your passion for legal advocacy, will contribute to fair and equitable legal representation. This position offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact within the community while honing your skills across diverse legal disciplines.
Duties:
Represent without charge, criminal defendants and parents or custodians in child protection cases as appointed by Judges of the Tribal Court. Review applications and screen new cases to determine a plan of action. Perform investigative inquiries as necessary to represent a client. Perform legal research and follow up on matters as assigned by the Chief Public Defender. Prepare or assist in drafting and filing motions, memorandums of law, petitions and other legal documents. Analyze legal pleadings and prepare for hearings, cross examine witnesses and other tasks necessary to defend the client. Articulate clearly in court a client's position. May deal with difficult clientele and members of the public. Interact with agencies such as Tribal Social Services, Wellness Center, Probation department of the Tribal Court, Office of the Tribal Prosecutor and others. Deal with Prosecution in the negotiation of pleas, which are fair on behalf of the clients. Recommend appropriate sentences for convicted offenders to the court, repair and file appeals where warranted. Carry out department needs to protect the sovereignty and customs of the Tribe and rights of the people. Coordinate case investigation, preparation and courtroom presentation. Advise defendants of their rights and ensure they have a fair trial.
Experience:
Knowledge of the Tribal Code, Ordinance, Tribal customs, traditions and constitution. Handling court documents such as warrants, subpoenas and other related legal documents. Basic computer programs in order to articulate written motions and correspondence for clients. Maintain professionalism and a strict standard of confidentiality. Coordinate case investigation, preparation and courtroom presentation. Display a high level of judgement and proficiency relating to court cases. Understanding criminal and civil cases and defend cases in accordance with existing laws.
Qualifications:
Completion of a course of study in accredited law school leading to a Juris Doctor Degree recognized as adequate to meet the qualification for admission to the practice of law in the State of Arizona. Candidate must possess a membership of a State Bar Association. Candidate must have two (2) years of specialized of experience in defending cases involving criminal law in a courtroom or similar field.
