As an Investigator, you will investigate criminal cases involving indigent adult and juvenile clients. Past experience in criminal justice laws and investigations is required. Possess a working knowledge of pertinent laws, regulations, court procedures, and departmental policies.

Knowledge of:

Techniques, principles, and methods used in criminal defense investigation Role and responsibilities of a public defender's office in the criminal legal system Court procedures in criminal trials Must have ability to: Speak fluent Spanish Interact and communicate effectively with individuals of diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, and with people from all sectors of the criminal legal system, including hostile and reluctant witnesses, complaining witnesses, expert witnesses, law enforcement officials, and families of victims Accurately obtain information and conduct interviews to support the defense of individuals represented by the Public Defender Keep accurate records Write clear, concise, and grammatically correct reports Effectively manage a full caseload while adhering to strict deadlines Prioritize and organize investigative tasks Testify in court as required Understand and analyze discovery in criminal cases Exercise critical thinking and problem solving in a timely and efficient manner Work closely with attorneys in planning and conducting investigations and keeping them informed of the status of investigations Serve subpoenas Typical tasks: Investigate criminal cases involving indigent adult and juvenile clients Work closely with attorneys in planning and conducting investigations Locate and interview witnesses and collect other information on behalf of the defense Take accurate notes during interviews and convert them into reports at the direction of attorney staff Photograph and diagram crime scenes Serve subpoenas Confer with attorneys to ascertain information needed for the defense of public defender clients and report back to the attorneys with all information collected Testify in court as required Join a Workplace That Cares We understand the demands of criminal defense.
