Job Description
Overview J. Sparks Law seeks a compassionate Associate Immigration Attorney who feels driven to advocate for the rights of immigrants and their families during these unprecedented times. J. Sparks Law is a small immigration law office with attorneys and paralegals who all care deeply about the impact we make on our clients' lives. This particular position will primarily involve the representation of individuals who need a removal defense attorney as well as those in need of family-based petitions, applications for adjustment of status, hardship waivers, VAWA petitions, U visa petitions, and asylum applications. Nearly all matters involving removal defense will be before immigration courts in or near San Antonio, Texas. Duties Appear before Immigration Judges in removal matters on both non-detained and detained dockets; in-person court appearances will be necessary Occasionally visit clients in ICE detention centers in Central Texas Independently manage other cases involving I-130 petitions, applications for adjustment of status under 245 of the Act, waivers and consular processing, I-360 petitions related to VAWA and SIJS; U visa petitions; pending affirmative asylum applications Manage paralegals to ensure client communication is both effective and consistent Implement internal quality control procedures Requirements Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school Active bar license, preferably in Texas Complete fluency in Spanish and English 2 or more years of experience as an immigration attorney Broad conceptual understanding of immigration law and an ability to spot issues and become an expert, through research and training, in specific areas within immigration law Ability to communicate clearly and effectively•verbally and in writing•with clients, government agents and officers, and judges Ability to independently and effectively manage individual cases with deadlines Willingness to communicate with supervising attorneys regarding legal strategies and issues, and a willingness to ask questions and keep learning
