Job Description

General Description The purpose of this class is to perform difficult professional work in the rendering of legal services to the County departments, units and boards. Duties and Responsibilities The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary. Provides legal counsel and representation to all County departments in civil litigation, administrative proceedings, etc. Attends and presents at Boards and Commissions' meetings and renders legal advice. Provides legal training to clients in County departments and Boards and Commissions Renders routine legal advice daily to all officers, departments, and agencies of the County. Prepares cases for trial, interviews witnesses, and examines law and evidence. Represents the County in trial and appellate litigation and handles complex issues of law as necessary. Drafts and reviews ordinances, resolutions, proposed legislation, contracts, deeds, leases, releases, franchises, and other legal documents. Conducts legal research and prepares legal documents. Ensures that information related to cases is disseminated appropriately and stored appropriately. Advises and/or supervises assistant county attorneys, paralegals, and clerical/administrative personnel. Conducts title searches, certifies titles, and handles closings. Prepares formal legal opinions for the signature of the County Attorney. Represents the state in criminal trials; picks juries, makes opening statements, questions witnesses, introduces evidence, argues before a judge and jury, and delivers closing arguments. Contact and confirm information for victims of crimes to determine restitution and victim impact information. Handles felony jail docket; negotiates dispositions and discovery issues. Reviews criminal cases for appropriate disposition. Represents the state in Motions to Revoke Probation and other motion hearings. Coordinates with community supervision officers with regard to the appropriate terms and conditions of probation, progress of probationers, and issues regarding revocation, modification, or adjudication of probation. Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires graduation from an accredited Law School and admitted to the practice of law in the State of Texas. Requires one to four years of experience in the practice of law, case management, transactional, compliance law, litigation, jury trials or closely related experience.

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken. The work is typically performed sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects. The work is typically performed in an office or courtroom.
