Job description:

Participates in a structured PostBar Fellowship Training Program consisting of classroom instruction, skills training, courtroom observation, supervised advocacy, and mentorship.

Conducts legal research and drafts memoranda, motions, briefs, and other legal pleadings.

Assists attorneys with case investigation, discovery review, witness preparation, and defense strategy development.

Participates in client interviews, counseling sessions, jail visits, and case preparation activities.

Assists in trial preparation, including organizing exhibits and reviewing evidence.

Participates in court proceedings such as hearings, plea negotiations, and trials, as permitted under law and supervision.

Collaborates with attorneys, investigators, mitigation specialists, social workers, psychologists, client advocates, paralegals, and other interdisciplinary team members.

Maintains confidentiality and complies with the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct and office policies.

Performs additional duties as assigned and supports the mission of the Public Defenders Office.

Serves as a primary hiring pathway into fulltime Assistant Public Defender positions for eligible and successful fellows.

Academic Requirements:

Third year law student expected to graduate before the fellowship start date; or Recent law school graduate; or Licensed to practice law in Texas by the fellowship start date.

Experience Requirements:

No minimum years required; fellowship is intended for new graduates and newly licensed attorneys. Certifications /

Licensure:

Must have completed the Texas Bar Exam or be registered to take it before fellowship begins.

Must be licensed by the fellowship start date OR awaiting exam results.

Applicants pursuing Texas licensure through UBE transfer, admission on motion, or other pathways are not eligible.

Preferred Requirements:

Strong legal research, analytical, and writing skills.

Strong communication abilities.

Effective organization and timemanagement skills.

Ability to work collaboratively in a fastpaced environment.

Demonstrated commitment to indigent defense, clientcentered representation, public service, or serving diverse communities.

Licenses:

Must be licensed to practice in Texas by fellowship start date or awaiting July 2027 exam results.

Salary:

$33.00 per hour during the fellowship. Annual salary upon transition to

Assistant Public Defender:

$98,904.
