Legal Assistant:
Family Law Clinic for
Self-Represented Litigants Job Summary:
Community Legal Services, Inc., is seeking to hire a full-time Legal Assistant to join our Family Law Clinic for Self-Represented Litigations. This clinic is located at the Prince George's County Circuit Court in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. The ideal candidate is passionate about working with underserved individuals, has excellent customer service skills, and works well in a fast-paced environment. This is an in-person position.
Responsibilities:
  • Open and prepare clinic by 8:30 a.m. daily for consultations with clients; ensure the proper maintenance of the office environment. Clinic closes at 4:00 p.m. daily.
  • Conduct intakes of clients in preparation for consultations with the staff attorney, including managing client expectations on wait times and process for speaking with the attorney
  • Place client cases with attorneys for brief advice and representation
  • Update legal case tracking systems with case information
  • Assist attorneys with administrative tasks
  • Manage, organize, and maintain documents in paper and electronic filing systems
  • Coordinate community outreach events and trainings
  • Recruit and schedule volunteer attorneys to assist clients in the clinic
  • Review client intake forms for completion and financial eligibility for free legal services
  • Assist with data tracking and reporting results for the Family Division of the Circuit Court
  • Maintain open lines of communication between CLS and courthouse personnel
  • Point of contact for inquiries about the Family Law Clinic for the Self-Represented
  • Participate in staff meetings and courthouse meetings as required
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to do detail-oriented work and manage competing tasks
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to multi-task and manage cases, intakes, and client calls
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and related products
  • Spanish language proficiency highly desired
