See details below Our Organization Pegasus Legal Services for Children is a statewide nonprofit legal aid organization based in Albuquerque, NM. Our mission is to promote and defend the rights of children and youth to safe and stable homes, quality education and healthcare, and a voice in decisions that affect their lives. We serve people aged 25 or younger with their civil legal needs and caregivers taking care of other people's children who are in need of kinship guardianship. We advocate for children's rights and partner with other organizations for system reform. Role & Responsibilities Pegasus seeks a Bilingual Legal Assistant to work with the paralegal team, staff attorneys, client advocate, program specialists, and office manager on behalf of children and youth in New Mexico. The Legal Assistant will report to the Supervising Paralegal.
Objectives of this role include:
Provide clerical support to attorneys, paralegals, other staff, and callers. Collaborative involvement in projects that promote trauma-informed, anti-racist, & intersectional systems strategies.
Responsibilities include:
Contact people to schedule intakes, run background checks on potential clients and potential adverse parties, review the caller's information in legal management software (Legal Server) for accuracy, and maintain up to date records. Communicate with callers in Spanish and translate notes into English so all staff can access them. Draft and send representation agreements to potential clients by mail or email. Draft and send welcome packets to new clients and verifications by email or mail. Send mail for cases, including certified letters and priority mail. Draft and save detailed case notes and timekeeping. Draft free process documents and send them to the paralegals for review. Maintain client confidentiality and abide by protocols that will be utilized in all cases and matters of work. Send translated documents to the client(s) after a paralegal reviews them. Review Spanish forms/templates with other staff when necessary. Interpret and assist with in-office appointments or walk-ins. Skills & Qualifications Required skills and qualifications: Bilingual in English and Spanish. Comfort in speaking professionally on the phone (in both Spanish and English). Ability to learn new computer systems quickly. Excellent customer service skills for interactions by phone, email, or in person. Must be detail-oriented, able to manage time effectively, and prioritize tasks accordingly. Proficient in Google systems (Gmail/Drive/Docs, etc). Excellent written skills (in both English and Spanish). Familiarity with and understanding of systemic oppression, including institutional racism, and demonstrated commitment to mitigating the harms of institutional racism and other forms of oppression Preferred skills and qualifications: Associate's degree or certificate related to legal administration or two years of related experience. Past client or customer-facing experience. Experience in working with the communities Pegasus serves. Notary certification to provide notary services for English- and Spanish-speaking clients, if certified. Pay & Benefits This is a full-time position. The annual salary is $50,000.Pegasus prioritizes staff well-being through our policies and culture. To this effect, we offer: A 4-day, 32-hour work week year-round (the office is closed on Fridays). Unlimited paid leave with a two-week suggested minimum, with an additional week off during the December holidays when our office closes.
