Job Description

Temporary Legal Assistant/Paralegal A municipal legal department is seeking an experienced Temporary Legal Assistant/Paralegal (5358) to provide confidential legal and administrative support to the City Attorney and legal team. The role is in-person, five days a week in Snoqualmie, WA. This position combines substantive legal support with high-level administrative responsibilities, including legal research and drafting, litigation and discovery support, records management, budgeting, scheduling, and project coordination. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, adaptable, and comfortable independently managing competing priorities while working closely with attorneys, City staff, elected officials, and members of the public. Responsibilities Conduct basic legal research under attorney direction. Draft, review, proofread, and prepare contracts, ordinances, agenda bills, and other legal documents for attorney review. Prepare initial drafts of pleadings, discovery documents, and other litigation materials. Assist attorneys with trial preparation and responses to requests for legal opinions. Support the end-to-end discovery process, including coordinating document collection, production, and compliance with applicable requirements. Prepare, organize, and maintain case files and coordinate filing and service of legal documents. Assist with investigations and interviews involving City employees and other parties. Maintain electronic legal research materials, briefs, memoranda, templates, and other department resources. Track legal matters, attorney workloads, projects, deadlines, and case status. Assist attorneys with workload management through calendaring, deadline reminders, client communication, research, and drafting. Prepare visual aids, tables, presentations, charts, and other materials for attorneys. Manage calendars, schedule meetings, and prepare and maintain confidential documents. Process invoices, monitor expenditures, and assist with departmental budget preparation and reporting. Compile data, statistics, projected expenditures, reports, charts, and other budget-related materials. Maintain strict confidentiality regarding legal matters, labor relations, collective bargaining, grievances, and disciplinary matters. Communicate professionally with elected officials, City staff, court personnel, and members of the public. Assist with office supplies, equipment, and other administrative needs. Attend evening and occasional weekend meetings as required. Provide additional legal and administrative support as assigned. Qualifications 3+ years of increasingly responsible legal and administrative support experience. Associate degree with coursework in law, pre-law, criminal law, business, records management, library science, public administration, or a related field preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience may be considered. General knowledge of municipal government and the functions of a City Attorney's Office. Familiarity with the Open Public Meetings Act, Public Records Act, and Mayor-Council form of government preferred. Knowledge of legal research, legal publications, records management, and basic legal procedures. Strong legal drafting, proofreading, research, and organizational skills. Basic accounting knowledge and ability to assist with budget tracking and reporting. Ability to independently manage projects, competing priorities, and deadlines with a high degree of accuracy. Excellent written and verbal communication and customer service skills. Ability to exercise sound judgment and handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with attorneys, elected officials, City employees, court personnel, and the public. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook, as well as Adobe products. Notary license or ability to obtain one within six months of hire. Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment background check. Ability to attend evening and occasional weekend meetings as required. Compensation $30-$45 per hour, DOE.
